I just replaced reed plates on a Hohner Crossover and a Suzuki Manji. The job was a lot easier on the suzuki even though it had more screws because my driver fit the Suzuki philips head screws.

None of my drivers fit well in the Hohner. I was able to make a #1 philips work with great care once I tapped teh holes with the self tapping screws by gripping the screw heads with pliers. Does any one know what kind of screw heads are on the Hohner and where I can get a driver that fits?

good question. I have both harps too and although I prefer the Crossover for playing, the Manji is wins when it comes to screws...

Pozi-Drive. the number one phillips strips those screws.

Hohner has a Pozi-Drive but it isn't very good.(i have one) Seydel has one and it is excellent.(i own one)
best screwdriver i've ever owned.

the Wiha company makes great Pozi-Drive screwdrivers.

Thanks MP.
Due to years of experience working on cars and bicycles, I avoided striping the reed plate screws, but I did not get them tight.

I am at work and I just went over to Lab Stock abd found they had #1 Pozi drivers, Wiha no less. I now have one in my desk tool box, and my harp is tight.

Just be careful that you have the right attachments for power if you are traveling out of the country. There is nothing worse than not being able to plug in your drill when you want to take apart or put together a harmonica!

What? I'm not supposed to use a drill? How else do I get the covers on tight? ;)

Hohner uses Pozidriv #1 screwdrivers and http://www.wihatools.com is where you want to get them. Seydels uses Pozidriv #0 on their harps. The slot where the screwdrivers goes tends to be fragile so you need to avoid going overly macho and overtighten it because the slot will shred quite easily, tho with brass screws, there's a bit more give. If you use a Phillips #1, use EXTREME caution.

I first ran into the posidrive screws in the early 80's. I say if it ain't broke don't fix it. There's nothing wrong with the phillips head.

Posidrive works a little better than phillips in a manufacturing environment with power screwdrivers. Torx works a lot better in this environment. I am suprised none of the harp manufacturers are using torx. I wonder if this is for a technical reason or jus institutional inertia?

I just speced a M1.4 x2.2 with a torx T5 head to mount a tiny motor. Even though I can barely see the screw head or the drive tip, if I get it close it falls in and drives without slipping. If something strips, it is the tiny little thread, not the head driver interface.

being as STME58 is an engineer, the correct tool matters hell of a lot.

personally, i like my drivers to have good purchase and be balanced.

i've found that the Seydel #0 Pozi(by Wiha) feels better to work with on Hohners than the Hohner Pozi #1 (reversible) that comes in the Hohner kit.

of course you can use any old #1 Phillips and not strip anything if you are careful.

I don't think LR was suggesting to use a phillips driver on a Posi screw, but rather, why did someone go and implement a whole new system that was close, nut not quite compatible with the phillips that was working well enough.

I had the drivers and a camera handy so here they are. They are very similar. The bits of brass on the Pozi tip on the left were probably left from my attempt to drive the Pozi screw with the phillips.

oh, i see.
actually i was unaware of the invention of the Pozi drive a while back.
i thought they were defective Phillips screws.

LR ran into them in the 80s. well, you learn something new every day. i thought they were a more
recent development.
