Went to a local market last sunday with the wife so she can pick up some organic veggies(Means misshapen;-))
Theres often an old guy there with a trestle covered in old tools, bits of plumbing etc,i'm sure you know the type
I usually have browse around and this time i notice a cardboard box full of old audio cables, plugs and stuff
Suddenly i notice a gleam of chrome at the bottom "Jeez is that what i think it is?"
I walk over to guy, trying to look disinterested and casually ask how much for the mikes
"Aw 60 bucks?"
Dropped my wallet in my haste..
You just never see these sort of mikes for sale down here in NZ,i don't know what our radio hams used to use.
Of course i was hoping that i'd find two intact pristine Crystals or C/Ms but alas they had long gone and been replaced with cheap no name dynamics.
Not too worry i will be definitely putting a nice element into the Astatic but the other one would be a bit problematic to make into a nice harp mike with that grille.

The one on the right is marked "Canadian Astatic T3"
the other one has only a plate engraved with"Torpedo"
Does anyone know anything about this mike?A quick google didn't turn up anything.
I feel like a kid at Xmas so to answer myquestion yep a bargain

the one on the left is odd but i wonder if you could take an inch or more off that grill? is it just insulation under the grill?

yes, they were a steal!

i had a canadian t-3 i traded to fritz hasenpusch for two elements.
i've only a vague idea of what the mic on the left is. i'll hazard
a guess anyway. it may be an American. Hmm, but then again..
Turner? anyway, it looks like a top of the line American to me.

one thing for certain. the mic on the left is rare. go to Harmonica Master Class vintage collection and look in vain for that mic. that's a good sign:)

Get a screw on connector fitted to the T3 and then put a CM99A86 element in it and you'll have a killer harp mic.

@MP

I think you're on the right track with American, Mark. The shell looks remarkably like a D5 or a Silver 6500.

The mic on the left as far as I know is an Australian made ellipsoid mic:

1948
Steanes Ellipsoid
Touted as the world's smallest ribbon mic, this Australian-made unidirectional transducer was designed to be inexpensive and to keep feedback to a minimum.

They come up from time to time on Aussie ebay. Zephyr and dynamax are another two australian made brands. The T3 can be a bit of a challenge to fit a screw on connector to because of the slot left when you remove the handle, but they do make great harp mics, especially for smaller hands.
Have fun!

Hi cripey

a ribbon mic!? v. interesting! ribbon mics tend to be large and contain...ribbon!- and lots of it too.
great find Jehosophat!

be careful with the grille screws (three of them?) on the T-3. they tend to strip very easily.

good deal. Don't know much about the Aussie mic but the T3 shell is one of the most desirable shells for harp - small because it is thin-wall metal instead of cast - which makes it smaller on the outside, but still big enough to fit a crystal or CM/CR element. That shell alone is worth about $100.

i believe the T-3 has the smallest diameter
shell of all bullet type Astatic mics.

like greg says, it is thin walled. therefore it is very light- even when loaded w/ a CR/CM element.

it was discontinued in the early 70s. pete sheridan whom wrote 'The Quest for Tone in Amplified Blues Harmonica' told me he bought one from Astatic simply because he liked the way it looked.
they were equiped with crystal 101s but it is more than likely that
there are examples with crystal 151s.
