I just read this article on the BBC website and was amazed that Fender was a private company. The article mentions Fenders guitars (the tele and strat) but there is no mention of amps. Are they made by the same company and if so wouldn't the amp market be just as big as the guitar market?

You would think so, wouldn't you?
Yes, they're made by the same collective entity of the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, which has been a private business since 1985. I think the reason why the Strat and the Tele were mentioned is most likely because, let's face it, they're Fender's two most famous products and have been for years. Which is odd in a way considering that the first amplifier with an actual Fender badge was built in '46, and the Tele and Strat didn't show up until '50 and '54 respectively. Maybe it just goes to show that general opinion is that Fender might be better at making guitars than amps.

Er, I don't think it means anything about anything. Its just a bit of bland copy. No doubt the strat is their best-known product, along with the tele, but sometimes i forget fender make guitars too. That's probably because to me a guitar is just a guitar, but an amp has character. I expect to a guitarist that speaks of my ignorance. Fair enough, I'll wear it. I just like amps. Dig it ----------

I think this is typical of people's perception of guitars being the thing that creates the sound, but any guitarist will tell you that an average guitar with a great amp will always sound better than a great guitar with a average amp.
Leo Fender really set the benchmark for amps. Many manufacturers used Fender's model and simply tweaked it.

"What, no new stuff? No product improvements or market share expansion or greater efficiencies? Just 'give us money so we don't look like sorry-ass mofos?'"
Not that I don't agree with you, but I can't see a whole lot of room for them to come up with new stuff. I mean, hell, they've bought out a lot of other respected companies. Guild, Sunn, SWR, Genz-Benz, Jackson, Hamer...and they've got the distribution rights to the reissue Gretsch guitars and Gretsch drums, Sabian, and Takamine.
In recent years they've reissued most of their great classic amps, collaborated with Roland on the VG Strat, and come out with a couple new series like the Pawn Shop Specials, but not enough new stuff to really get excited about.
Bottom line is that it looks like Fender, and most other quality brand manufacturers, have started running out of ideas for new stuff or how to improve upon their vintage and modern technology.
