My pal (and co-producer) Bryan Ward at The Tone Room, a recording studio in Oxford, MS, has been having fun creating music videos. The one below, less than 60 seconds long, isn't just hilarious, but makes me wonder why there isn't more of this sort of thing on YouTube. It's a slice-of-life snapshot of studio work. Check it out--and pass it along:
The guitarist is Daniel Karlish, a local guy.

@reedsqueal: That's how Albert King played. It's probably somewhat responsible for his unique bending style.
BTW, Hendrix could play guitar and bass that way when he needed to. A lot of the bass on the Experience records is actually overdubbed by Hendrix on Mitch Mitchell's regular right-handed bass. All Along the Watchtower is a famous example.

being an american, i found it hysterical. i love brit humor or humour as you spell it but a lot gets lost on me. like the monty python skit where some barristers? disrobe in chambers and are wearing lingerie.
or the drag race, where the men are running in drag. oh well. ----------

Well, month python aside, I mean I can explain the joke in that, it may not be a very funny joke, but I know what it is. Is there a joke in this clip? Or is it just funny because the geet is upside down, or is the playing inappropriate? Or is it the dynamic of the clip with head entering unexpectedly? Or is it funny someone would do a cover of a skynyrd song? Or is it just funny because the poms and Aussies don't get it?
SuperBee, actually you are right in that at least the monty python jokes can be explained. it is just that americans don't find drag very amusing, as a very general rule.
i can't explain why i find the shredder funny. it's an american thing.
"Or is it just funny because the poms and Aussies don't get it?" now that, is funny! ----------

Ok, here's the thing, on a music website, when a thread is entitled "very funny rock shredding", and then the word hilarious is used...my assumption going into it, is that the humor is: the guy can't play.
So I listened to it, and I thought hey, pretty cool, for a little demo-ey 60 second shredding thing. Now before everybody piles on me with the in's and out's of fretboard wizardry, theoretical modes/open tuning discussions....I meant that in a "you're in the music store and right away you can tell if the guy noodling around on the guitar, knows his way around it a little bit", kind of way. I thought this guy did.
So i'm still scratching my head regarding the hilarity.
Oh, yeah, NOTHING funnier than barristers in court in their lingerie..........unless it's The Ministry of Silly Walks.
sincerely,

no eharp. your humor is more refined and well honed than the average american.
did kudzu really post this? in the jagger thread he claims JR hijacked his account. perhaps JR hijacked his account then welcomed himself back too and is posting amok. now that's funny.

Adam's due on stage in the UK tomorrow evening (Wednesday 29th). He must have just lobbed this grenade into the forum for a laugh before heading for the airport and boarding the aeroplane (no, not airplane). Wants to keep us on our toes in his absence I expect.
Well for one thing, that type of guitar shredding is considered by many to be downright wanker - ish.
But I think the main thing is this guy is cranking out this energetic piece, and doing a great job, without much passion or elation as would be implied by the piece.
He's just turning tricks like the last prostitute in Boy's Town to pay the bills.
Geet'er done! It's time to make the doughnuts! Fake it till you make it!
shanester, yes that's it. i used to work in a guitar store and to sell a guitar my boss would pull one of those speed things as a demo. boss would pull this off w/ all the emotion and elan of a slug in repose. guitar and amp combo? SOLD! ----------

If this is distinct American humor, it must have something to do with that damn lingering puritan work ethic our country was founded with! ---------- Shane,
Yeah, I think the lack of facial emotion is what makes it funny. It reminds me of my uncle's sense of humor. I remember one time he brought desert out after dinner. He got out some of the good china to set cookies on, but then he just set the whole bag of cookies on the plate. He walked out, stiff upper lip, carrying the plate like a waiter would at a fine restaurant. I think he even had a towel draped over his other arm.
For the record, I'm American, and I love watching Monty Python.
In my experience, when I have to explain a joke to someone, I probably shouldn't. But here goes.
What I found funny was the juxtaposition of the guitarist's fierce commitment--he really started getting into it, so much that he felt forced to stand up, give it a bit of body English (so to speak)--and, when it was over, the way he sat down and just...sat there. Quivering slightly. As in, "Was that okay?" As though he were simply providing a customer service, like any other employee.
It was the silence after the shredding, the strangely intimate and awkward moment after the frenzy, that seemed funny, and very human, to me. In other words, this is anything but rock bombast. It was closer to Monty Python, actually. Very dry. "Will that do?" "Of course." "Well, right. Okay then."

Actually I didn't see any humour at all. Having fun playing is having fun but is not humorous. At least that is from an older Aussies perspective. But then I love older British humour & about the most recent US comedy series I laughed along with & enjoyed was either Cheers or Mash. I find this funny:-
We as harp players have a bit of an advantage over guitarists in that our funny playing faces are somewhat obscured by having our instrument in our mouth. I found a little bit of humour in the fact that that guy Adam posted had a poker face for most of the video-that's very unusual. Guitarists make the funniest faces...
This is by far the funniest guitar shredding video EVER. A friend showed me this clip before I knew it was from a real movie. I thoughtit was a comedy spoof from Saturday Night Live or something like that. I love the way he collapses at the end like he just spent 5 rounds in the octagon with Anderson Silva. This might be the funniest movie scene ever!
Lets see if Yanks and Brits can agree on a little Canadian 1990s humor. It's got the cross gender the Brits should enjoy and a nice mullet for the Yanks.
, but bringing mullets into this... that's an act of war.
i know, right?! who shall cast the first stone?
famous aussie and pommie mulleteers Mel Gibson y'all. and..
every pommie and aussie rockstar from ray and dave davies to jeff beck to nick cave to dave hole. ----------PS did very much enjoy my 'blackberry isn't working'(hysterical!) and 'bobby vs. satan'
