Thank God it works on the second try...It's sorta like a gambling casino - the excitement of winning after getting screwed keeps you comin back for more punishment...hahahahahahahahahahahaha

Just posted 3 posts. First time, took 3 tries. Second, 2 tries. Last, one try. I doubt this is a real pattern, but it was odd.

I have taken to copying all my text from a post before entering a captcha. I lost a couple posts last week.

My guess is the server is automatically refreshing the Captcha answers but not the Captchas. The longer you sit with a post open before you post the answer it the more likely it seems to come back broken. If it refreshes ever X minutes you are much more likely to get it refreshing on you the first time, and less likely on the second time and almost sure to get it the third time. Another possibility is instead of time it's based on the puzzle being solved. If it's serving one Captcha up on every page that's opened until someone solves it then posting time might affect it. Someone else answers it and it updates?

Hmmm... Interesting theory Nate. My last - deliberately brief - post went through first time. The length of time it takes to poset does seem to be linked somehow. I'm gonna keep this window open a little longer.

Seems like a pretty good theory, i never thought about it before, but a captcha code sits there from the time you log in.....so under your theory nate..if you lurk without logging, then log, post a brief message and type code you sould be good to go...but... if you log, lurk and then post captcha's gonna get ya?

hmmmmmm

and all so that we don't have to be bombarded with penis enlargement techiques or knockoff gucci handbags

edit: logged, lurked, posted, zapped by captcha.... 2nd time all good

It seems to catch me just about every time. I tend to look down the list of threads for something interesting. I'll open up several threads at once and then read them one by one. If that's what is happening my browsing style is just about the worst possible technique to get Captchas right with.

This Captcha, not Captchas in general. I refuse to believe they're all as badly designed as this one.

Could be worse, I just heard on the news that a fellow was driving down the highway and slammed into the back of a salt truck and then a tractor trailer slammed into his car, that's a problem...

I once had to testify in front of a grand jury for a drunk driving case where a guy plowed into a motorcycle that was sitting at a stoplight, driving it into the back of a truck that was also stopped at the light. What was really crazy was the guy had to switch lanes to do it. If he'd stayed in his lane he would have blown through the red light and probably not hit anything. He would have still been in some trouble though. There was an off-duty cop getting set to cross the intersection the other direction.

The motorcyclist survived. He was wearing the full leather riding suit, but he had a broken back. He was lucky he wasn't paralyzed.

The drunk was actually someone I kind of new, a waiter at the local Denny's. He was the only waiter I ever completely stiffed on a tip, and that was before the accident. Wow was he a jackass.

Anyway, back to our regularly schedule Captcha test.

I don't understand why we're doing this. I assume Adam is paying the people who run the website. Why can't they be required to clean up their mess and either fix the CAPTCHAS or eliminate them. Why are we screwing around doing their job?

My last two posts tonight have both failed the first captcha entry and they weren't particularly hard to read so I know I was right. Let's see if it happens on this one....

edit: nope.

So what's the recommendation? Don't waste time reading threads or carefully crafting a message?

It's a pain in the arse. Works only on 2nd attempt! Sometimes.

Yes, this does seem to be a time out issue problem.

One way round it would be to compose your post in Word or similar, then copy and paste that into your post and enter the captcha and it will work.

Alternatively if you've been typing your post for more than a few minutes, then assume it's not going to work 1st time and type any single character in the captcha box hit post message and then enter the new captcha properly.

As stated before, it doesn't matter if you use upper or lower case letters.

Of course there are occasions when the captcha system does not work at all or the code is not visible....

Have you noticed it's not as bad as it used to be? They lengthened the time before it times out a little a couple months ago. Oddly, since yesterday, I've been getting two code boxes.
