It's not bringing the site down, but it seems we are still having some lingering problems with Captchas not working the first time you type them in (about 2/3's of the time or more for me). The support tech has asked me to set up another page with a Captcha, so:

http://www.modernbluesharmonica.macwebsitebuilder.com/captchatester.html

(It's also on the bottom left of the menu for now.)

See if the Captcha works for you. If it doesn't, let me know in this thread. Give a couple details, like if it worked on the second try. One possible theory is that the Captchas are renewing too quickly... Hopefully this will help track the problem down.

Given that you need to register and then sign-in to post, why are the Captchas necessary? I guess that too many spammers are getting through the registration process? But these spammers aren't sophisticated enough to answer the Captchas before posting spam? Or it just slows them down so their account can be deleted before they do too much damage? Could things be changed to require a Captchas be answered during login? Is that not enough? Or could a poster's posts/sec be limited? I guess that you guys only have a limited set of features available to work with? (I am a fan of this board's format, so wouldn't suggest radical changes.)

If I do; no biggie, just try again.

It seems to come in spurts... some Captchas are tougher than others- R's and A's can look sort of alike, and 8's and B's... but it's not just tough ones that are failing. I could look into other Captchas. I know briefly there were other ones, some server side change. They seemed to actually be tougher to solve, at least for me.

As for why we need them... we've gotten better at spotting spammers, but they still get through sometimes. The forum software has gotten better for deleting it. We used to have to delete it one message at a time. Now we can delete all the spam on one thread page at a time, but spammers usually only post one per thread anyway. Before the Captchas it wasn't uncommon to have a spammer get 200+ posts before someone caught it. Now, since they post slower, they usually get caught well before 20. That means instead of taking a couple hours to delete them all it only takes fifteen minutes. It also seems to deter them from trying.

What would really be nice is if we could turn the Captchas off for anyone who has 'X' number of posts (maybe 100), but I don't think our software supports it.

There might be easier captchas to read, I guess, but the captchas on this forum aren't hard to read.

First try failed. I'm certain I entered it correctly.

Son of a gun - the previous 'test' post captcha I just posted worked the first time.

What about the double word Captcha "reCAptch" a lot of sites use? - It acutally serves a productive purpose at the same time - helping to digitize books.

Bonedog... I think the site actually had those for a couple days, then they switched back. Of course, I'm a big supporter of digitization of knowledge, but there are some who might complain Google is running afoul of some copyright issues. They've got good lawyers though. :)

Captcha still messing up for me.

Same thing, first solution rejected second effort accepted.

I am 100% sure it's not due to my typing in an incorrect code.

I guess it's not really a big deal...10-15 seconds extra at most, but still, it is really annoying.

Using Internet Explorer (that's a whole 'nother story)

time to get rejected on my first captcha, so i can post this

EDIT: captcha got tired of the one rejection game, rejected twice that time.....fun

I've had the rejected first attempt a lot recently, but last few days it's been fine again. I'm using Mac Safari from the UK (also had the problem at work where I use win IE9 and on my windows phone - I don't think it's the browser)

I have noticed slow page loads and that the harmonica logo at the top of the page didn't load properly on my broswer (looked like the file was corrupt). This has happened intermittently (infrequently) for quite a while now and I wondered (guessed!) if it to do with a backup server being used while the main MWB server was undergoing maintenance.

Worked 1st time. But that is the first time in the last couple weeks it has. I don't post too much, but sometimes I quit when the captcha plays up, bit like a chance to think again whether what I have to say was really worth saying
Edit: and this came up 1st try too! Wonder if the edit will? If it does, I won't remark.

Typing captchas without capital letters work much better and usally I type correct from the first time, while earlier I typed them with capital letters and there was bunch of mistakes.

Boris,

It's good to know that the captcha isnt case sensitive, but this issue has nothing to do with uppercase/lowercase or mistyping.

There is a bug in the captcha system which seems to reject EVERY first attempt for some people - even though they are certain they have typed it correctly.

However, the problem does not seem to be affecting everyone all the time.

I never use uppercase letters in the captcha, my browser even autofills many of them now, but I still have my attempts rejected.
