I had seen someone here post this idea:
http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/2215479.htm
Or: Would anyone like to get a small group of harp players in the area together to jam, talk harp gear, share etc. Any tips to help us get going? Most of us are intermediate at best but interested in learning and improving. All ideas welcome.
I wondered if any Phoenix area blues harmonica players would be interested? I thought for starters we could meet at a jam and brain storm a meeting place, time, how to get the word out, etc...
I figured at a bare minimum we could simply share knowledge and play a little. What do you think,

Hi Arcadlandj. I'm in Tempe, and would be down to meet up if you get something organized. I typically don't do jams, as that just ain't my thing, but I do love to talk harp... Let me know if you set something up! ----------

Ray Hinkle does a good jam at Stingers, but it is way across town from Tempe, up in Glendale.

I'm in... I live in N. Phoenix area. Isaac, I'm holding you to a get together after January 15. I usually try to play at jam with Boomer at Aros Grill on Wednesday nights. Not sure a jam is best place to meet and talk shop, share ideas, etc. Would really enjoy meeting more harp players.

I guess I'm not thinking this would be a true jam, particularly initially, but more like blues harmonica players getting together to help each other move to the next level. Perhaps it could turn into a more formal jam, but it would be focused on the harp.
Those of you who would like to meet, do you have a particular time during the week that would work? I will do more research on location, but if any of you have suggestions let me know what you think.

For me, really any day on the weekend would be best. However, I can make arrangements if I know way in advance. Work a second job... Mon-Thur. ---------- L. "Squeeky Ray" Robinson

Yeah, weekends are usually better for me too. Since we are all spread out, maybe we could pick somewhere centrally located? The Rhythm Room is pretty central, but we'd have to look at their concert schedule... After the 15th works well for me too...

Lets go with Sunday, January 22 at 6:00 and lets meet at Baby Kay's Cajun Kitchen at 2119 East Camelback Rd Phoenix, Arizona. They have an out door sitting area and we can meet to brainstorm a future meeting place, etc... and maybe play if the setting allows. What do you all think?

Well, I think we should all just get to know eachother, where we are all at with the harp and what our individual goals are with it, and then see what we would want to do if we started to get together at regular intervals... ----------

I think Isaac has a great concept. Let's meet and get to know each other. I'm open to working on anything. Yes, I'm trying to develop my blues skills but I grew up on a variety of types of music and getting exposed to different styles of harmonica playing has me interested and hungry for anything and everything. ---------- L. I will be there. Look for a guy about mid 40s, probably wearing a baseball cap, with a large black Lee Oskar harmonica pouch on the table in front of him. Again, my name is Dan. See you then:)

WOW, that was really great! My first time playing with other people (besides a teacher) and such a valuable experience to learn about the experiences of others-and to hear many other aspects of the harmonica up close. I've heard about harmonicas being customized, but didn't understand how that could be helpful. And really hearing what playing in another position could do the musical experience of harmonica. It was just a couple of hours, but it was equivalent to months of spending time by myself. Thank you. Let me know a good time to meet up again.

Also, for folks that are sitting at home playing on your own, get out there and meet other people. It is a little scary, but you will never regret it.

How about something like Feb 18. Bring the wives, we'll have some brews and I'll smoke a pork shoulder for pulled pork sliders. We'll have some cole slaw and stuff. You guys bring whatever you want as a side. Hey Phoenix area harp players.. you're invited just let us know you're interested so we can get you directions and make sure we have enough food. Also confirm if 18th will work. ---------- L. "Squeeky Ray" Robinson

I'm pretty sure I can do the 18th. Let me check with the better half to make sure. Pulled pork sliders? Mmmm. Sounds great. What could we bring? Hey Squeeky Ray, what was the name of that guy who has the web site you told me about? You said he gives harp lessons for like 20 a month? I wanted to take a look. Dave Barrett's site was really excellent, so I thought I'd take a look at the site you told me about.

Sure thing! I'll bring my pedals and a few mics. Although I typically get my amped tone through the amp simulators in my pedal, and then make it louder through a clean little 20-watt PA, I could also bring my little Epi VJ amp that I modified for harp if you are interested in playing an actual tube amp.

Ronnie Shellist and I have started to talk about maybe creating a Gussow/Shellist event in Phoenix sometime in the next 6-9 months. Can we count on the support of this core group? I'm thinking Shellist, Gussow, and maybe Corritore for a long day of classes, followed by a three-harpist show at the Rhythm Room, perhaps?

@Arcadiandj: I'm not sure I'll be out this friday... It's been a hell of a week, and I've got a big deadline this weekend for this research paper I've been working on... If I can get it all done in the next day and a half, I'll try to go, but at this point I can't say for sure that I will be there... If I do go out, I'd be in the heart of things right on Roosevelt avenue. I usually post up along Roosevel somewhere near 2nd street. If I do go, I'll try to post here to let you know...
@Adam: Certainly! I hope it happens sooner than later, because I'm trying to finish up the 'ol diss, and could be moving on to another town at the end of the summer for some post-doc action... But if I'm here, you can count on me!

Aw... why can't I live someplace with lots of other harpers around?
I drove across the Southwest once. The 75 mile per hour speed limits... then you'd get to town and there would be a sign that said 75 miles per hour- strictly enforced. I wish I'd had a car with a bigger engine. I also had a near death experience somewhere in Arizona or Nevada. It was winter and I had a sweater on, but it wasn't that cold. I had to take it off. It was a pullover. It was a straight road. No problem. Until it got stuck. I know time seems to dilate when you are panicked, but it had to be at least 45 seconds at 75 mph. I finally got it off, and there I was, still perfectly in my lane.

Okay... I've contacted a couple of other Harp players who have agreed to come. So looks like 5 or 6 attending. Again, I'll have Pulled Pork and Slaw ready. One of the other players is bringing home made Mac/Cheese. I know Arcadiandj is bringing something. Isaac is coming without his wife as she has another commitment... So Isaac I'm sure there will be plenty if you don't bring a side dish. Guys bring what you'll be drinking or let me know so I can try to have on hand. A very good guitar play will be joining us to back track.
PHOENIX AREA HARP PLAYERS your invited.... Let me know at boogiestblues@gmail.com and I'll send directions.
I don't know if we will continue using the forum for other details but I imagine we will to announce on going events. ---------- L. "Squeeky Ray" Robinson

Really great time! Not sure of there are not many Phoenix Harp players on this forum or not many in interested in working with others? But you missed out! Local guitarist Pete Klerh was on hand to play for us! Isaac Ullah shared some of his knowledge on position playing, amp usage and "Open Harp Surgery." 5 of us had some great time jamming, discussing music and enjoying great food and brews. Squeeky Ray, that was awesome! Thank you so much for having us over. It was the best harp learning experience that I have encountered. And Isaac thank you for being so open and generous with your knowledge and skill. I wish you well with your progress on the big "D" and hope I can see you out on one of these first Fridays.
Any thoughts about our next meeting? Angi and I are up for hosting the next meeting, but I would be a much smaller/closer venue. What do you guys think?
