I had a Texas Crude with the trapaziodal cab and 12"speaker. Really cool amp, but hard to dial in. Coolest looking amp out there. I probably should have kept it. I still have the 118, Kendricks version of a Champ. It's a great little amp, great tone, I always get good remarks about it. The 118 also has a line out so you can plug directly intothe board or PA.

That's too much dough. They pop up on eBay and sell for less dough. Plus, that's mid 90's harp amp technology. You can do better for less dough.

"mid 90's harp amp technology".
Hm, I thought older is better? Or do you mean it isn't old enough? Please elaborate! Not trying to be snarky, just trying to learn something.

That amp was one of the first harp specific amps. A lot has been learned since then. Harp amps have continued to improve since then. They have gotten louder, more toneful and more feedback resistant.
For $1800, you can find much newer amps that are louder and sound better. Check the most recent pages of the for sale thread.

Oh yeah, the asking price is rediclous - I found a like new Wezo-45 for about the same price. I only mentioned the Texas Crude since Kendick Amps came up and you never know who's looking for what around here. Hell, some people actually play though blues blaster mics, so there's no accounting for taste......

Well...
I've got several of those mics with an assortment of elements... Shure 520DX's, too...
I've never had a problem getting tone out of any of them... ---------- The Blues Photo Gallery

First bullet I ever bought was a Bluesblaster. In comparison to all the other mics I've played on since, I actually didn't find it to be all that bad. Volume pot was what went bad on it. Warranty stipulated that they had the final call between repair and replacement, so they sent me a JT30 Roadhouse instead, which I actually wound up loving. Gotta get a replacement element for it now. Cheap Japanese piezo was in it instead of a crystal. ----------

I remember when they were just starting out in Austin. A young harp player named Chris use to hang out with me and he built the amps. I prefered the old fenders. I think Walter Tore has posted a clip of himself playing through a toilet paper roll recently, lol, and those are much cheaper than commercial bullets.

Very true. Joe's got the goods. I know BB's aren't held in very high regard. I found myself cursing mine when the pot went out. But as long as they hold up, they sound pretty good IMHO. Just found out that Hohner sells replacement elements for it and they'll work with a JT30RH....question is whether it'll be crystal or piezo they send me. ----------

Joe-L, have you played a recent Kendrick Texas Crude harp amp? I found them to be very loud and feedback resistant with great tone. It's one of my favorite harp amps. Perhaps much has been learned in the last 15 years about amped harp, but I'd wager Gerald Weber has learned a thing or two as well. He is a real amp engineer after all, not some guy tinkering in his living room.

The Texas Crude Harp Amp design hasn't changed significantly since it was conceived, there's the Canarywood cab option and it's biased a bit cooler than described in Gerald's original article, more filtering at the B+ node, bigger cathode bypass cap on the power tubes.
It's a unique & characterful amp, but still "mid powered" compared to a lot of 2x6L6 fixed bias amps (admittedly a different kettle of fish tone-wise) - if I was going to buy a Kendrick to use predominantly on stage, it would be the regular 2410 based on the 5F6A(rather than the Badassman, though if you wanted reverb & had the money, that might be an option, not sure how/whether the voicing on the 2 Badassman channels differs from the original 5F6A?).
Gerald's got technical amp smarts to spare (largely self taught), but it's his practical approach, outside the box thinking & great ear that are the foundation for his flashes of genius. On occasion, his "off the cuff" remarks have inspired me towards a whole new train of thought, or a build. Some people aren't keen on his hyperbole, he gets misquoted a lot, but he is a very clever man. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

Anyone with any experience or information who can tell me about the Kendrick Vagabond 5 watt?
At the current sale price of 800 dollars (?) with free shipping how does this amp compare with the HG2 and other amps in that price / performance range?
I would also like to know how it compares with the other less expensive amps around that same size. Thank you.

I checked that one out too. I thought it was just their Champ clone in a new suit, but the description details a different amp. I have the Kendrick Champ clone, one of my best amps.

Why aren't they called Weber Texas Crudes?

Kendrick is his wife's maiden name. I seem to remember an anecdote about how it softened the blow when she found out he was jacking in a lucrative day job to build amps! ;-) ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

Yes that is correct Mark. Kendrick is his wife's maiden name. I applied for job building amps for him at his shop in Flugersville TX. (I don't know if thats how its spelled or not) in 1997. He offered me a job, but it was not for much money!!! At that time he had one guy (a vietmnesse guy he introduced me to) that did most of the amp building. Gerald Weber made a lot of money in the meat market bizz. He owned 4 or 5 butcher shops in and around Austin and sold them to go full time in the amp bizz. His shop and bizz seemed to be alot less than I was expecting. As mark said Gerald Weber is one of the more impressive minds in the tube amp bizz!
