Well BYBO3 went very well and I'm pleased to invite you to Click here for the BYBO3 Wailing Wall of Honour.
Thanks to all those who took part. Everyone did a good job getting their music out of their heads and into the ether for others to enjoy.
If anyone wants a complete breakdown of the scores, I'm hoping Lumpy will put a link in this thread, to his Google Spread sheet.
I've now done three of these challenges and would hate to think I'm keeping all the fun to myself. Therefore if anyone has the motivation and ideas necessary to get the next one off the ground, please step forward.
It's been fun watching how we have all progressed with our harp playing but now it's time for me to get back into that woodshed.

Lets see if this works.
BYBO3 results spreadsheet
I guess I get the blame if there is any errors :^(( Such as misspellings of names which I copied off the voting posts.

Congrats to all the winners and a big thank you to Tooks and lumpy for their hard work. It does motivate one to put it out there. This doesn't change the overall winners but a cursory glance at the spreadsheet suggests that Heart2Harp aka Matthieu should move up the rankings because his votes haven't been consoldiated under the one name.
Cheers

Yeah, great job everyone. I added a couple of the videos to my favorites. Jodanchudan, I especially liked your video. By the end I was pretty close to a 3 way tie for my votes and the great video helped me pick the order, or at least helped me feel better about not picking someone else. :)

Kingobad said it all: Good job everyone for sticking you backside out there. I enjoyed all of the entries, and thanks for the comments on mine, I appreciate them all."
After a couple of days, let's start a BYOB3 "fallout" thread, where we can ask for, and receive specific critiques on our own videos. I love to use these things as teaching/learning moments. They ALWAYS help me grow! ----------

Excellent work done all round both on the organization side and on the creative side. I love these competitions, they really pull everyone together and reinforce the feeling of community and that is what we are regardless off location, age, sex, religious beliefe or any of that crap that seems to prompt so much grief in the everyday world. We are on a wonderfull journey both individually and as a part of this great online brotherhood so pat yourselves on the back and smile because we all have to a greater or lesser degree a priceless gift, we have the ability to make music and that is a wonderfull thing!

Thanks, tooka, for organising this, and thanks for the votes, guys. I completely agree with others that the BYBO competitions are great motivators - there were plenty of superb entries here, so well done everyone!

I like Isaac's idea of a "BYBO3 "fallout" thread".
It would be good to get feedback from those that didn't enter to find out why they didn't and maybe what we could do to entice them to get involved?
Also how could we make it better? E.g. Harp wars. This forum versus another harp forum.
Maybe use YouTube views to decide video popularity etc etc.?
Must be some great ideas we haven't considered yet?

The only problem I had was that with so many videos it was hard to sort through them. I finally opened each one up in it's own tab and closed them as I eliminated them from the running. On previous BYBO's I'd given each one a score on a scale of 1-10. That took forever. :)
Since I put it off to the last minute it was a bit of a time crunch, especially with some of the videos running close to 5 minutes. I know we had some browser crashing issues when we tried to put them all in one thread.
With as many entries as we had, we might need to break out into categories in the future- maybe with a backing track, with other instruments but still all live, harp alone, loops... I don't know. It might encourage some people to submit entries for more categories too.

I would like to propose an origonal song section to encourage the budding song writers on the forum, it can't just be me and Walter (not that i am even for a moment comparing my efforts alongside his!) but there is a definate lack of origonal stuff getting posted, or did i just miss it all?

I'd like to thank Tookatooka for another outstanding job on BYBO3, and congratulate the winners and everyone who participated. As for changes to the organization, I think keeping it simple (wide open) is the only way to get a high level of participation without a lot of grief for the organizer(s).
I'm glad that submission of sound files was accepted, since I've not had much time to do videos lately and happened to have some sound recordings done on a dark, rainy evening while waiting in my car. This probably meant that my submissions got fewer ears, but that is OK, at least I got to participate.
Perhaps I should wait for a "I need more feedback" thread but I would like any constructive criticism w.r.t. my sing/play piece (SaintJames3rd). I re-arranged and re-wrote a lot of the lyrics, and this was my singing debut on the forum. My harp playing wasn't the greatest, I admit, and I could use some pointers on how to better sing/play in a solo harp-and-voice situation. ----------

I'd love a original song contest! I'm a much better songwriter than harp player! :)
Mr. So&So- I like playing St. James on a minor tuned Lee Oskar. It's a pretty song, and I liked your lyrics. I don't know why, but videos help people remember songs, even if it's just a few words on the screen, so just from a 'marketing' point of view I'd suggest trying to make a video. On your playing and singing, I think maybe you could have used a little reverb added. (You can do it after the fact with a free program like Audacity). You paused a lot after each note/phrase. A little echo would have filled out the space in between a bit and kept the somber feel. If you'd had a guitar playing it wouldn't have stuck out so much. Still, it was a good take. I'll have to listen again to the lyric changes. I've been thinking about rewriting some of the lyrics myself. I like some of the standard verses a lot but some of them are weak. A couple of yours sounded better than the original!
I've got to get out the door now for a doctors appointment, so I can't relisten to the other one right now. I'll try to remember to do that later, and to give a closer listen to St. James. :)

Thanks again for a great job by Took!
I personally prefer a youtube video. I think in most music, especially solo stuff and blues, you get more out of it by hearing and seeing the performance. It's more fun watching you guys too.
I've wondered how a noodling festival would go over. No amp, no other music, just 60 to 90 seconds of what you would do at a stop light or for a warm-up. No structure needed...squeeze in parts of 10 songs or no songs..whatever....Just fun noodling.?
