My band, The Hipbone Sam Band, was named Best Local Rock Band in The Illinois Times: Best of 2011 by popular vote.
This is kind of a big deal around here. LOTS of nominees in different areas of interest covet these awards every year. If you walk into a restaurant here in Springfield, you'll sometimes see a framed certificate on the wall next to the register naming that restaurant Best Pizza, or Best Mexican, or Best Comfort Food establishment of whatever year it was elected.

Hipbone Sam Band
Whether acting as an amiable open jam host or a gregarious front man for his band, Hipbone Sam (a.k.a. Kevin Hawkins) instills a constant and spirited presence on the local music scene. From humble beginnings as a solo acoustic guitarist hosting various open mics, HBS now presents two weekly jams (Tuesdays at Koo Koos Nest and Thursdays at Blue Grouch), featuring the full-band, jam experience for lucky onstage guests. Combining that with gigging nearly every Friday and Saturday night at a some local club (and plenty of Sundays afternoons, too) makes him the hardest working man with a band in Springfield’s bar business arena and a deserving winner of this coveted award. Other bands in the running include Nil8, GRIM, Lazer Dudes and Screamin’ Vatos.
This really is cool for me since I haven't been in the game all that long. I'm a really lucky guy to be able to play with such talented musicians.

Thanks fellas. And I forgot to mention, when the article calls Kevin the hardest working man with a band, they ain't kiddin'. That's his sole occupation anymore. Quit his high paying job because he wanted to play music for a living. Probably the only guy I know personally who's been able to carry this off.
