Diatonic: LP with TB octaves. Except I TB all high notes.

Chromatic: TB everything.

TB mostly but LP is integral.
My playing incorporates a lot of octaves.
I TB most bends but not OB (yet).

I would consider myself to be a beginner. I TB most everything, with some LP. I am actively learning to LP more. My goal is to switch between the two at will. I believe TB is best for some things, LP best for other things. I am currently a TB'er though.

Thanks guys, this is very interesting.

Running Total to date

LP = 40
TB = 12
UB = 2

A few players are 50/50 split LP & TB so I have counted 1 each in these cases.

On the basis of this very small survey it appears that LP is used most. The majority of LP find it necessary (including myself) to lay the tongue on the harp for splits and quite a few have expressed a desire to use more TB in their playing. UB appears to be rare.

I guess for anyone learning to play harp unaided then LP is the most instinctive approach, which I reckon is the main reason for the large count.

I personally use a lot of tongue articulation in my playing so I'm not looking to replace LP with TB. I like the sound of TB and listening live to a fellow forum member playing everything TB (Draw & Blow bends, OB's/OD's) has made me understand most things are possible with this technique. A few of the semi-pro players that have responded are happy to switch between TB & LP as necessary.

I have tried a little TB playing and can now bend the lower notes but it is a struggle to do the higher note bends and OB/OD are impossible for me.

Hearing a TB locally has made me examine my tone and prompted me to try and do better but with LP. I am making progress also with playing a TB slap but with my lips.

I'm going to continue working on this and also practice TB when I can but I'm not going to beat myself up with this. I'm enjoying playing harp again and play a lot now and I don't want hit a brick wall.

Learning to play OB/OD's was a big step for me and there is still much work to do which I intend to do LP.

If anyone else would like to take part in the survey it would be great.

Tongue block and lip purse. For lip pursing I now use the tilt method that I prefer to call lip blocking because my lower lip blocks the holes on the sides. I have experimented with U-blocking but it's not for me.

Primarily LP with TB octaves. Occasional TB for single notes. I incorperate them all as needed, why limit your self.

I tongue block and lip purse, depending on the song and style I choose. On chromatic I always tongue block.

I started off LP exclusively. Now I do about 60-70% LP and 30-40% TB. I don't think I'll ever be an exclusive TBer.

LP. TB octaves is something i've started trying to incorporate into my playing a little more. Had not heard of U-blocking until I read this thread. This is my first post too btw. Have really enjoyed this forum since I joined a couple of weeks ago. Look forward to becoming a bit more active here. Cheers

Lip Purse with Tongue Blocked Octaves. I can Tongue Blcok singel notes and bend them too, but I just hate doing it that way. I cannot overblow while tongue blocking, but am very good at overblowing lip pursed. I'm an advanced intermediate on the Adam Gussow scale.

Around an intermediate level player.

LP 95%+ of the time

I do tongue block octaves but it still feels a bit awkward. I am slowly working on TB to add to my arsenal.

Looks like it's coming to an end now.

Thanks to everyone who contributed.

I get the impression that most who LP would like to TB as well (but who wouldn't) and quite a few already incorporate a little into their playing in the form of splits and octaves, with a few working on TB bends.

It appears it is quite difficult to use the U block technique.

LP-60%
TB-40%

I don't have too many set rules. I play a lot of octaves and single note lines, but I jump between embouchures all the time and sometimes even play with a different embochure based on what harp I am on.

U-block most if the time, t.b. when I need to do octave splits, and l.p. only when I need to do fast staccato stuff or chord bending. I find u-blocking to be MUCH more versatile and useful than mist players like to admit.

I mostly tongue block, I used to lip purse only, then I discovered that with a great amp and vintage mic, I can sound different than lip pursing through the PA. I don't always have the confidence to TB on slow tempo songs where each note is emphasized so I will UB and TB. Certain songs require that I switch to the PA mic and TB or UB, for example: When I want a less distorted Chicago style and more of a Rice Miller style. If you think U Blocking is a bad thing, please watch Norton Buffalo's two part CD on playing the harp, Norton used this style. I can't recall exactly what he says about it but If anyone asks I'll go back and check it out.If you want to improve your diatonic tongue blocking get a chromatic, many people I've spoken with agree that it helped with their diatonic octaves. I think if you have a whole bunch of tools in your box you're more likely to find the right tool for the job.

up until about 5 months ago when I started TB.Now it,s probably about 80% LP as I try to incorporate more and more TB in my playing.

I have never even attempted u-blocking.

Type Raw Count Percentage
Lip purse 64 69.57%
Tongue Block 25 27.17%
U-Block 3 3.26%
TOTAL 92 100.00%

EDIT: Sorry about the big space, I have no idea how to remove it and still keep the data formatted as a nice table...

According to those numbers, U-blockers should have some government entitlements to go with their minority status. Forty acres and a mule, anyone? Free housing? Hmmm, I might have to learn me some U-blockin'.

What's also interesting to me is that it's roughly 70/30 LP to TB as a main embouchure style, and I'd say that's about the same split that I spend on each embouchure in my own playing... Weird...

EDIT: My captcha spelled "joypad"... Also very weird... There's something spooky about this thread! :)
