Anybody here tried these yet? Huey Lewis swears by them. If I splurge on a high end harp, I'm thinking of making it one of these.

They are nice looking harps. I seem to remember the last time it came up someone had played them before. You might be able to find a hit in the forum search using Dannecker as a keyword. There are also some great custom harp makers on the forum.

well... those are MS harmonicas, which makes me kind of skeptical. I also don't see any traces of customising on the reedplates in the pictures.

I'm not judging anything, just thoughts.

I tried a Dannecker Blues and wasn't all that impressed. It's not customised so to speak, though they do pride themselves on well tuned harmonicas. To be fair I wanted this to be overblow friendly and it wasn't(even though I specified this requirement) also the 2 and 3 draw bends were a bit airy. If I knew then what I know now I could have gapped the harp to my requirements, however I thought I was paying for this.

The harp was quite heavy which I quite liked and it looked nice and was comfortable in the mouth. Mr Dannecker was very concerned the harp didn't meet my expectations and was keen to try and solve the problem but ultimately was happy to refund me my money which was fair enough.

I do recall another forum member or two who liked the Dannecker harps so I may have been unlucky or the overblow requirement might have thrown them.

I'm on the same page with jim on this one.... the fact that they are MS harps is one thing that would discourage me from buying them. MS harps can be made to play better, as any harp can, but they aren't my choice for an overblow/overdraw harp. And though they work for Huey Lewis, who is a good player, does he even use overblows and overdraws? Of course, if you aren't an overblow/overdraw player, this may not be a factor for you.

One thing's for sure, they really are pretty harps - very classy looking.

If I remember corectly Mr Dannecker is not a harp player, I know I read this but don't remember where.

This is from an old topic about Dannecker harmonica. From the hand of barbequebob " The Dannecker is not on the same level as the stuff done by customizers like the Filisko guild, Joe Spiers, Chris as Bluesharper said because the single most important ingredient that's missing is the reed work thosse guys do. Danneckers may be better tuned for your needs in terms of tuning or gapping, but those guys do FAR beyiond what they do and the biggest differences between customizers is in the reed work, which is THE most important part of the process and so I can't put a Dannecker in their category at all."

WTF? Why would anyone spend money on one of these when they could buy a Harrison?

Just kidding.....don't start throwing stuff at me.

@KingBisquit:
I can throw a custom Harrison offer at you :D

@Todd Parrott:
I assume if you make your own combs and covers, it can make the price pretty steep. I even think that MS harmonicas can play well too - but they need more customising than other models (due to lower initial tolerance quality etc).

I have about 150 MS reedplates that lay around collecting dust.

Tony Dannecker does make significant improvements to OTB diatonics, but doesn't like to do work on overblows. He does bring regular hohners to a standard of some of the better harps out there (1947, Manji etc) and it's really easy to adjust them as he's done most of the work, so in essence, buying a MBD or a Crossover from him is the smart move if you don't want to spend a lot of time under the hood. I'd go as far to say that the extra you'd pay against an OTB, it's a no brainer.

The Dannecker models are a different kettle of fish. I haven't tried one, but like Grey Owl says, Tony is one of the nicest guys ever and will listen to your objections and take product back if you're really unhappy.

I've never played a Dannecker, so take this opinion for what it cost you. ;-)

I just looked at his site for the first time in awhile. The Dannecker Blues is $136 (97 euros) and the Dannecker Blues Optimus is $264 (185 euros). In this day and age, I can't imagine paying that for one of these harps. I'd go the Seydel 1847 Classic (around $90) route instead, in a heartbeat. For an extra $15 you can get an 1847 that's been "Beta-ized" by Ben Bouman.

Even Dannecker's cheaper Blues Harp MS Custom is $57 (40 euros). For that (or maybe just a wee bit more), you could get a Seydel Session Steel, a Suzuki Manji, a Hohner Marine Band "Crossover" or a Suzuki Harpmaster and a bunch of beer.

If you are considering a high end harp, check out Quicksilver Harmonicas (Mike Fugazzi a/k/a HarpNinja).

Somehow, some way, he has figured out how to get custom harp precision, response and volume without the in your face tonal brightness and raspiness that usually accompanies the tighter tolerances. The tone of his custom harps is unbelievably warm and smooth. Better than my Buddha Harps and better than my Suzuki Fabulous. And he is capable of setting harps up however you want, I am profoundly impressed. FWIW.

That's a FACT. (PERIOD)

I have a LoF MB from Mike. Fantastic.

Super service, super harp.
