Here are some pictures of a few powder coated covers from Chris Reynolds. Though he's not offering these on his site yet, he was kind enough to send me some to try out. I realize that the solid red and blue harps may look like toys, but I was just playing around with the colors I had. There are zillions of colors available in powder coating, but these are just a few colors he already had lying around in his shop. These covers are some he was experimenting with, and were made from old covers I'd sent him. These days, with custom comb colors already available, the addition of powder coated covers makes the color combinations endless. One of my favorites is the bamboo comb with black covers.

So, Todd, what did the powder coating do to the tone of the harp in your opinion. It is my understanding that painted covers dull the sound. Is that correct?

I really like the red covers on that metal comb.

You are correct that painted covers can darken the tone, but these covers don't really have as much coating on the inside of the plate as the outside does, so there is very little difference in the tone, at least with these covers.

I bet a Marine Band would sound really good with painted covers... and would probably look pretty sweet with black covers.

Nice! Did he blast them be powder coating? Also, do they feel any different on the lips? I'd also be interested in how long the cating lasts?

I'm also curious about the feel on the lips. I might imagine they'd be "slipier", which would make playing easier. Is that correct? I'd be a little worried about chipping too, especially if dropped. How durable is the coating? They look really awesome! It's great to see some work on custom coverplates. IMO, coverplate design probably more effect on the tone than does comb design, so it's cool to see some more options there!

Cheers,

@Matzen and Isaacullah - Not sure if he bead blasted them or not. That's something Chris would have to answer. These don't really feel too different on the lips.... I guess they are similar to the feel of a Hammond or Firebreath plate, but the coating is not as thick. Chris said that the powder coating is pretty darn hard to remove, even with paint thinner, so I doubt you's have to worry about durability.

from reading the title, I was disappointed, I thought you had put pictures onto the covers but the were all plain colours, not even stripes or spots :^(
