A few years ago I bought a 7 harp set of these on musiciansfriend, only because they were so cheap and came with a zipper plush case which I still us to this day. Theres a reason they were so cheap. Chinese made first of all. The reed plates had brass reeds, but the plates were made of some kind of metal-plastic composite. Plastic cover plates, which made it light and comfy in the hand.

Recently I took one apart and realized that Special 20 reploacement plates will fit in them, but you'll need SP20 screws as well, the screws in the Piedmonts are too small. MS screws may work, I haven't tried that yet. But this may prove to be an interesting little hybrid depending on how airtight I can make them with the plastic cover plates. I'll let you know what I come up with.

I had the same screw trouble when fitting SP20 plates to a bluesband comb.

Were you using SP20 screws?

I have Piedmont covers on a SP20, just so I can tell it apart in the case, and actually, I have a full blooded D Piedmont that actually plays pretty well. The plastic covers mute the sound a lot, but they are the most comfortable covers on my lips I've ever had, so they make decent covers for a practice harp.

I think the plastic combed Hohners are all pretty much interchangeable parts wise.

You're saying the SP20 in Piedmont's clothing sounds more muted?

Yeah. :) They are really nice to practice on when you are working on muscle memory stuff though. At one point I was planning on making a black covered SP20 with a clear acrylic comb. I actually put it together briefly. I wish the paint on the Piedmonts didn't wear off so easily. I actually think that might be why they taste so bad when they are brand new. It looked really nice, but I had it apart and the acrylic comb developed a small crack. :(

Hmmm...I bet the Blue Ice would work too. You know, Hohner just came out with that Blue Midnight model in the MS line? Well, the comb is made out of a translucent blue plastic, which Hohner claims brightens the tone of the harp compared to black plastic framed harps. As far as I can tell...the combs on the Blue Ice are made out of this same plastic. This also may be worth looking into. I have yet to take one of mine apart. My 15 month old has taken a liking to the Blue Ice in G I have right now.

Harmonicanick, actually I don't remember him playing Piedmonts. I think he was a Big River guy.

What amazes me on those Piedmonts is the lack of airtightness, if that's a word. I have a feeling it's either a result of the plastic cover plates or maybe that composite the reedplates are made from.
