Over the last few years of playing harp I have noticed a hard lump forming in the palm of my left hand. It is not a point of contact, but between the main 2 folds of the palm. I must assume it is from holding my hand in a bent position and blowing moist air through it for hours on end, or it is just a coincidence. Is this common or is it unrelated?

A lump or a callous? Is it strictly the skin, or below? If so(or it is painful in any way), I'd go see a doc. No lumps or callouses on my hands after 22 years of playing...

Could be harpritis or harpal tunnel syndrome? See a doctor immediately you may have an obstruction in your No.2 hole.

It's probably a callous.

I have one on the side of my middle finger that's constantly there,it's actually pretty big looking at it in more detail.

I guess it shows how much practice your getting in.

Ted nugent once said he used to practice guitar until his fingers
bled.

It must be callouses with harp players:o)

I don't think I've heard that one before. You say it's not at a point of contact?

"you may have an obstruction in your No.2 hole."

The next time you are in the doctors office for a physical you could ask your doctor, but my money would be on callous. Are you sure it's not a contact point? Sometimes my harp slides around start wailing. My grip changes sometimes and when I get too rough I end up with a sore tendon in my thumb. When I hold the harp to check my grip it doesn't bother me, but somewhere in the moving around of things the end of the harp grinds it a bit. I really need to learn to round the corners off of them. I've got a Dremel around here somewhere.

Yes tooka, I recognize that as humor. The harpal tunnel syndrome was excellent, the no.2 hole obstruction is getting old on this site though. And the masturbation jokes... I guess I asked for that. I think it's a cyst.

Thanks AW. I looked up Dupuytren and it sounds eerily like what I might have. I will look into it.

If it's a cyst get it checked..

Physical ailments from playing the harmonica:

Arm strain
Neck strain
Lip problems
Tongue problems
Hand strain (from cuppiong a heavy bullet mic)
Hangovers
Sleeplessness from giving your all at gigs
Guilt (from young chicks who like the harp) if you are married like me
Hearing tunes in your head
Severe attack of the wallet from feeding your addiction
Stress from arranging gigs
Stress from arranging musicians
Stress from auditioning people who call themselves musicians but who should have stayed in the bedroom
etc
But you luv it!!!

I noticed this same thing you're describing in my left hand, too.
....round off edges of harp..

Should be fine. Not enough to worry about.
Having calluses is cool, when we have something to show for them..
