What can I coat/paint my Golden Melody combs with (around the edges) to keep them from chipping.

I have no idea. Maybe clear nail polish? I have no idea how that would react with the plastic. You could try it somewhere inconspicuous. Make sure you don't seal it shut.
Or you could upgrade to custom combs that are more chip resistant. I think some of those combs HarpNinja is importing are GM combs. They look gorgeous.

There's really nothing you can do to prevent this from happening that I know of, except for a custom comb. Hohner is aware of this problem and they are listening to the players' advice to offer the Golden Melody with better comb options in the future.

Custom comb is a great idea but for the poor man I may use a strip of duct tape.

what are GM combs made of? some sort of pre-plastic bakelite? was looking in my comb drawer at my lone GM comb.
it's all crumbly and looks like i found it among various forms of detris on the beach. ----------

perhaps GM combs are biodegradable? or maybe the chips can be used to deter slugs and african snails in the herb garden. ----------

They probably are aware by now. Golden Melodies have done that for 60 years! Lol
Bend the contact points of the coverplates in just a little, they chip when the coverplate is pushing too close to the edge of the plastic. If you keep the contact points on the back away from the edge, it's impossible to chip. I have two Golden Melodies, my main Bb and Main Eb, both came by way of Jason. Both have wood combs. Wood rules. Lol ----------

By Hohner being aware, my point is that it seems that they are just now starting to take the Golden Meldoies more seriously, as well the problems associated with them, mainly the comb. It seems to be their most neglected harp, though some pretty popular players use them or have used them through the years, like Carlos Del Junco, Terry McMillan, Buddy Greene and Howard Levy. Not sure why this harp has never been taken too seriously by Hohner...
I am constantly expressing to them a need for a Golden Melody Deluxe, with a better comb of course. :)
