Any solutions? I am aware of dapping blocks and that that is similar in style to Seydel's solution. In the past, bending the cover plate slightly has worked. However, I have a Low Eb MB that won't not rattle. I have a Big River and SP20 in Eb that won't rattle, but this MB is killing me.
It is my personal harp...I actually just got it and will only use it here and there, but I could probably use it tomorrow night... ---------- Mike Quicksilver Custom Harmonicas Updated 3/23/11

What's a dapping block? Could you stick a thin piece of electrical tape on the cover over the offending reed? ----------

It is sorta like a mold so you can tap the cover plate to a different shape. I've ruled out playing too hard. What is weird is that just bending the cover hasn't worked. That is for sure the problem, though.
I've never not been able to fix this on a harp down to Low D, so it is frustrating, lol. ---------- Mike Quicksilver Custom Harmonicas Updated 3/23/11

On my crossover, I put a small washer on the front screw on each side of the cover plate. Didnt fix it completely but helped. ---------- "A harmonica is not just a souped up kazoo" -Mo Rocca

Mike - A 'dimple'under the offending reed can work. Just a tap with a small ball pein hammer, or the ball of a tuning fork will do it.------- KiwiRick

i use the ball end of a glass cutter.
i put double sided tape on a block of soft wood and stick the bottom plate to it so it doesn't move around.
then i put a small piece of the same tape on the inside of the of the cover where i want my dimple. then i stick the glass cutter to the tape. this keeps the ball end from moving when i hit it w/ the hammer. if you are accurate, you can make a perfectly round relief w/out bending the lip or misshaping your cover. it looks like a boil.--

The thing that the MB Thunderbird now has is something what Filisko has been doing with all of his custom MB's in the keys of A and lower for many years to prevent the 1 draw reed from rattling against the bottom coverplate when played too hard. The curvature of the covers sometimes can be a problem in lower keys. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Honestly, I am not too familiar with what Filisko does to the low plates. I've played a Low F he made, but never took note - it was several years ago. However, I did use a punch to make a dimple. It was really easy to do and actually looks good. It worked perfectly. I was going to use a glass cutter, but I wasn't sure where to hammer it from.
I got some good advice offlist as well and am covered until the Thunderbird comes out, lol.
Thanks! ---------- Mike Quicksilver Custom Harmonicas Updated 3/23/11

How about a Turbolid? Or if you really want to go crazy you could experiment with a read re-design. I know Turbo has a modded Seydel harp where they use magnets to change the frequency of the steel reeds vibrating. I don't know anything more than that. I wider shorter reed slot might work too, since the end of the reed wouldn't be able to swing as far.
If you really want to take the covers to the extreme you could snip the cover parallel to the reeds and lift the lower part. It would create an extra side vent- in the middle of the harp!- which might actually help the volume on the low reeds. You'd need to figure out some way to support the lifted flaps though. It would be pretty distinctive looking!
