hi Everyone

My name is Dave and im totally new to this harmonica world , and i have to say i am really enjoying it. iv played drums for 20+ years and always fancied a go at harmonica so about 6 weeks ago i got my-self a C harmonica and im pretty much hooked. I live in Portadown in Northern Ireland and i was wondering does any-one know if there is any teachers around or any gigs to check out in my area. it wouuld be even nice to know if there was anyone else about my area that plays harmonica. Im mad keen to get started and any info would be much appreciated .

Welcome! My 15 yr old son is a drummer and has his first gig with his new band tonight.

Just for trivia, the drummer for The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (country) plays harp in a neck rack while playing drums.

hey Rocket welcome from an old drummer and old harper in Bristol.

Your drumming skills will go well with the harp, good luck

You should join the NHL and get their magazine and news of all the festivals etc

I agree 100%. The NHL Website is at http://harmonica.co.uk.

The European Blues Assocation (who host Blues Week in August) are also worth checking out.

Ya, you may think it's nice now but just wait. You'll be sneaking down to the computer in the middle of the night to bump your post count. You'll be "just dropping in" to see if BBQ Bob has thrashed your comment yet and then it will be 3 hours later. Little packages of new harps/amps/microphones/pedals will start showing up at your door and you'll have to lie to the better half that it's just a book club you signed up for. Ya....just you wait. ;)

Hello there Dave...I grew up in Portadown during the seventies and 80s. I left in 1986 to seek my fortune in the UK and have lived here ever since. However I do go back to the North every few years and know a few musicians round the Armagh area, but no harp players unfortunately. There are a few other members here from both the North and South and they might be able to help with instruction.
One place I have been is a jam in Monaghan in a bar called McKennas. There was a really great harp player on one of the nights I went and i'm sure he could give you a few tips. Highly recommended and a very friendly crowd. Check out their myspace site for more details.

I hope your enjoying the harp and stick at it...you'll soon get the hang of it and it will become you new obsession.
