In addition, I just came across this CAPTCHA from hell. Glad we don't have this on MBH, haha!

the ones used here are some of the easiest ones to use. even still occasionally I have had to go thru 6 or so to get the forum to take what I typed in the box as valid heh

I sort of don't mind this captcha, I just wish it would work better in FireFox. The picture of the 6 characters usually does not show. Very occasionally it shows up initially and then disappears. If I want to post a message or reply I have to jump over to IE which just sucks.

Don't have any trouble with Firefox fortunately other than the usual trying to guess 'is that upper case of lower case?' But I am having trouble on my mobile phone - Samsung Wave - used to show the captcha, now it doesn't!!?!! Has there been a change of some sort?

I don't know why captchas are required at all. You can't post unless you're logged in, you can't log in without an account and you can't get an account without the approval of an admin.
If a spammer jumps through all those hoops, just delete the comment and ban him. Don't make the rest of us suffer every time we want to participate.
Note: It took me three tries to post this!

Timeistight- the problem is the admins can't cover the forum every minute of every day. We would get spammers coming in and posting hundreds of spam posts, 1 to a thread. By the time a admin noticed there could be 250+ threads spammed. We can delete whole threads and we can delete a member, but we can't delete every post by a member except by going through by hand.
The spam would bury real posts several pages deep and it would take a couple hours of just sitting at the computer deleting to get rid of it all.
The CAPTCHA's seem to be implemented by the hosting company. We've asked about honeypots to get rid of robospammers, and we've talked about turning the CAPTCHA's off after the admins double check that they don't seem to be posting spam, but the software only seems to give us certain options.

i almost, i said almost, like the CAPTCHA puzzels. it's like a game and some of the puzzles are funny/graphic/ un-PC. sometimes i only get two tries and then the CAPTCHA won't budge. it refutes the truth. then i start all over. ----------

I really think the honey pot solution should be put into effect here. I know Adam is working with a web developer to try and spruce up the forum, so maybe that's already in the works. So far, in the sites I've used them on, I've not received ONE single spam comment or email. I've not received any complaints from clients about them either, on the sites to which they're applied.

@bluemoose: I use Firefox, but on OSX. I noticed that bug a few times in designing sites. It's because in the code, the CAPTCHA image doesn't have a width or height property assigned, so sometimes Firefox tries to guess, and wrongly guesses 0 for both. If you upgrade your browser, they may have the bug fixed. I haven't had the problem for a while.
