My Fender champion 600 has developed a hum when I turn it on. It gets louder as volume is increased. Is this a sign one of the tubes are going?

It may not necessarily be the tubes because that sounds more like a 60hz hum and can easily be something else, and with amps made before they used grounded plugs, it can be a polarity problem. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Apparently it's a common problem. There's a guy called Alnicomagnet who sells a mod kit on Ebay

Most of the hum comes from the heater wires-they pass directly over some high-impedence areas of the circuit. If they are too short to be led away from the circuit, you may have to extend the wires-that would be the hardest part of the fix,if you had to do that.

Well the amp was running fine for about 2 years with no hum but it's only in the last few days that the hum has started. So would changing the tubes not effect the hum? I love this amp and just want to get it back to normal. I'm a bit wary about turning it on in case I do any damage.

If it's easy enough, you may replace the pre-amp tubes with known to be good tubes. I'm would not say you can rule out the tubes as one source of hum.
