I know this forum has a fair share of pirates and other reprobates aboard, so I'm quite sure that this thread will get some action.

My wife and I are flying down to Key West on Thursday for four days of fun and sun: a first time there for both of us. Where's the hang? Blues clubs? Restaurants and fish houses? Cool stuff to do? Please weigh in.

And if you're local and want to buy us a beer or a shot, by all means contact me offline: asgussow at aol dot com.

We like Sloppy Joe's because you can catch live music any time of day. http://www.sloppyjoes.com/entertain.cfm

Might see a one man band or two at Mallory Square...have a harp or two in your pocket at all times.

Watch the boats come in and the food is great at
Conch Republic Seafood Company.

The Hemingway home is very interesting.

Try The Green Parrot bar- they often have blues bands- I know Jason has played there in the past.

I copied and pasted this but it was agreat place to grab breakfast at.

Damn Good Food To Go - Damn Good Food To Go is a hidden gem of a bargain on the waterfront. They have great food and low prices, right in the heart of the Harborwalk on Key West's Historic Seaport. They have patio seating where you can see the boats and the harbor. They have breakfast starting at 6am. Breakfast burritos, omelets, French toast, eggs, lox & cream cheese on a bagel, and even biscuits & gravy! Lunch will not set you back very much, with sandwiches for as little as seven bucks. For dinner they have hot meals like Fish & Chips, Taco-Burrito, BBQ Sandwich. Get blackened Grouper sandwich, veggie burgers, french fries or curried rotisserie chicken salad. Get a milkshake- whatever you like! They are located on the docks at the end of Front Street, which is at the busy end of Duval, parallel to the water. They also deliver, and they're open until midnight. They do not take credit cards.

you want cool stuff to do or COOL stuff to do.
i can give you places to go and watch some very odd transgressions, and at night it is on border of illegal (probably pretty much past the "border"). i would suggest staying in your car with the doors locked if you want to be an observer. i dont think you want to take your wife unless she is a faster runner than you.

but those tourist spots being mentioned are probably the way to go.

Think in colors;

Green Parrot for great live music - often blues - and such a cool and friendly bar - and Blue Heaven for the best brunch (also has live music) you've ever had!!!!

I saw my first Butt-plug in Key West in 1996. My brother had to explain what it was after i spotted it in a shop window. Quite an eye opener.

There is nothing much you won't see. The island is only a few miles across. You could ride a scooter all the way around in a half hour. Even though it's a small tourist town, The locals say that they have more bars per square then any other city in the US. There is always a lot of people about when the cruise ships dock. Tapers off a bit when the love boat cast off. Try the beach at Fort Taylor. It's just off of Duval. A lot of new people miss it. You have to go through the old Navy base to get to it.

Sloppy Joes.

Spent a weekday lunchtime in there. The band went from blues to reggae to jazz standards and all were perfect. Then some old dude came in, walked up on stage, sang Every Day I Have The Blues better than BB King, then went to the bar to get his payment of a beer.

Very cool place.

The No Name Pub is a little east towards Cudjoe and off the path. It's unique and known for it's Pizza. You can also drive past the pub and see the Key Deer. They'll actually come right up to you if you get out. You can hold your hand out and in a fist, they'll think you're giving them a treat. I don't know if you're a fisherman but if so I can give you a phone number to a great guide in Marathon. Funny thing is that I have been going to the Keys since 1979 and never bothered with Key West. We go to fish, dive and live. In fact, we're going down on the 19th for a week. We got married in the Keys and this is our anniversary trip, 20 years of fun with the Redhead.

What's the usual way of getting around while we're in Key West? Will walking and the occasional cab do it all? Can we rent small motorbikes--Honda 50s and the like?

just signed up for this epic board, and since my username was actually a nickname i regrettably got in Key West back in November... well, here's what i learned:

-seconding the above on: Green Parrot, beach at Ft. Taylor, the obligatory Sloppy Joe's, the Hemingway House, the sunset at Mallory Square, and on rubbing salt in my wounds (this hurts).

-so do all that touristy stuff around Duval... then, since you're with your lady, make a point to also catch a sunset on the other side of the island, down by where the Southernmost Point is: Louie's Afterdeck Bar. it's very classy, it's quiet, it's mature, and it's literally right over the ocean. very different from Mallory/Duval--but very Key West. (also: the restaurant inside has fancy food.)

-HUGE SECOND to the No Name Pub on Big Pine Key. that place is great, but is off the beaten path (though not too tough to find, you can drive right past it). pizza is good, atmosphere is great, and there's gotta be 120,000 single dollar bills on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. if you're driving, make the stop (you need a break--you're on vacation).

-don't rent a cab if you can help it; don't drive if you can help it. if you're getting around, go by bike, moped or the golf carts they rent (that everyone uses).

-i had a buddy who worked at the Rick's complex of bars on Duval--those were fun, and had some tunes. you'll see a lot of covers (guys with guitars) all over the strip here. there's also an open-air bar right by the fishing boats that has bands all day long, some good, some not (it's a dive--but good seafood). can't remember the name...

-for music, look for this guy: http://garyhempseykeywest.com/
i think his schedule is on the site (he should be at Capt. Tony's, another mandatory stop)... he gets stuck doing Buffett songs (and is excellent), but he has all these Key West original songs. ask him to play one of those (like Charter Boat Chum Wars) and you'll make his day.

-DO NOT MISS THE CAT MAN AT MALLORY SQUARE SUNSET! yes, all-caps. (and do not be sober for that.)

OK... now back to my padded cell. have a great trip!

Adam, my wife and I walked most of the time but there is a trolly car that comes around on a schedule so we would hop on and go to the next place we wanted to see. That was several yrs. ago but I would suspect it is still in operation.
Were both parott heads so we ate at Jimmy's place on Duvall st.We ate a "Cheese burger in paridise" for lunch:) Make sure you go to the Atocha museum. Mel Fisher has a lot of Spanish treasure on display.

Don't miss the tour of Hemngway's house. Also, my wife and I rented bikes and cycled all over the island which was great.
