Anybody playing Shakuhachi here?
Just yesterday I got a chance to try it out in my friends home. He said it's difficult to get sound from - he's wife's mother is flute player and she couldn't get a single note out. However, it took me just 15 seconds to get a sound and play little melodies.. I guess the breath control with singing and harp playing helps. :)
Anyway, I loved the sound of it, how it felt in the hands and everything. I had to order one immediately. I think it is helpful to the overall musicality to try out and play many instruments, although there is a danger of just drifting from instrument to another without putting enough time to learn anything properly. But if it makes you happy - there's nothing wrong with that either. I guess it depends what you want..
If there are shakuhachi players onboard, I'd love to hear experiences, tips etc!

I used to play one long time ago. Still have it somewhere in a storage unit... I enjoyed it and found it easy to play. I think it helped me with breath control on the harp more than the other way around. I still play an native american style flute and didgeridoo.

i had a plexi-glass one made by riley lee(one of the few non japanese grand masters.)
i think it is the most diffficult of flutes to play.
i got it right off the bat, but most can't get a sound due to having to blow across that beveled surface.
the 'ohe (hawaiian nose flute) is also hard to play but very soothing like the shakuhachi. ----------

I love the sound! Where do you order one and how much are they? I played around with a ceramic and a regular silver flute a lot years ago--never was much good at it--but flute has been one of my most favorite sounds all my life. . . ---------- ==================================== Always be yourself--unless you suck. . . -Joss Whedon

This is what I've found out they recommend: http://www.shakuhachiyuu.com/
The price is 165$ which is quite reasonable, I think. (The bamboo models are from 400-3000 and above.) This is also the model I tried out - the look and feel & the sound is really good.
