You've all seen the video, but THIS is weird. Please check it out. I didn't know that computers could talk about blues in this way.

Computers have been able to read text since
the Commodore Amiga came out.

This is the beginning. Remember 100 meg hard drive
was about the max.

On the Mac, you can convert text to speech.
Go to system preferences, speech.
Tick the "speak the selected text when the key is pressed"
Then set the keys.
ie. Command + Shift + s
The mac will speak any text selected, and yes there is a choice of male of female voice.

i've done some work in TTS (text to speech) applications, and this is pretty typical of where the state of the art was a few years back. doesn't sound bad, but you wouldn't mistake it for a person. like ASR (automated speech recognition), TTS turns out to be a lot harder than you'd think.
