I found this the other day and was wondering if anyone had ever seen one like it. Works good but has a small ding on the brass cover. If anyone is interested in it make me an offer.
Cheers,
Chris

Looks like a mic for a Japanese tape recorder.

Looks like an "Awia". I'm not sure if thats the correct spelling, but yes rbeetsme is right. It is a japsnese mic from the sixties that someone put a volume control on.

Looks like it could be a BR-549 from a customizer named Junior Samples.

I have one of these.

That's not a volume control, it's a bolt to screw it onto the base (not shown here, but mine has a grey one). I inherited a box of old electronics stuff my Great Uncle when he passed away and this mic was in it.

I could never find a way to get inside, but I always presumed from the weight of it that it was a dynamic mic. Anyway I think it probably is a Japanese mic, but the base on mine has the Phillips logo stamped on it. I guess it's one of those mics that bundled with reel-to-reel recorders and rebranded for many different manufacturers

The cable is way too flimsy for a gigging mic and would have to be replaced. I never got round to it.

@ Mrlongname
Does yours have a number on it that starts with the letters DM-then a few nubers?

Dunno!

it's in my loft and I'm at work. I'll try and dig it out later tonight. Where is the number - mic or baseplate?

It should be at the bottom of the mic at the cord end.

Yeah it has a number but it doesn't start DM, it's been stamped on and the ink isn't very legible. I think it's BL and then numbers. Here's some photos. The Phillips symbol wasn't stamped on as stated above, but is a sticker (I had to dig hard amongst the junk in the loft to find this, been several years since I used it - my recollection wasn't perfect). A sticker is the easiest way to rebrand something so my Japanese theory still holds, although it does read made in Holland.

The OP's mic is in better nick than mine - mine has a large crack along the length of the plastic shell (inherited it in that condition).

Here's some picture:

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the great info. I love the original base that you have in the picture Mrverylong....
Mine has just a faint bit of one letter showing and the rest is worn off. I got it in a box of stuff and have no idea about it. I am just learning harmonica and learning about the gear. I checked the impedance on it and it measured around 800ohms so it definitely isn't a high impedance mic. I did try it through a tiny transistor amp and it works but like I said I have no real playing skills or know much technique.
I thought it might be interesting.
Thanks again,
Chris

aiwa, american, kent, phillips, and at least one other dutch company made tape recorder mics similar or identical to the one pictured above. that grille was popular in the '60s.

so....what is it?

They both look japanese from the sixties, but if ti says made in Holland than maybe it is? If had the DM-###. then it was made in Japan for sure.

Some of these old mics make decent harp mics. I've never heard anything that ultimately sounds as good to my ears as a good CM, let alone a CR, BUT their advantages are light weight, smaller holding/cupping size, coolness factor and sometimes low prices.

Yeah Greg I agree about some of what you said. I have bought alot of cheap jap sixties mics off Ebay. Its a roll of the dice, but I have a Awia that is brand new from the sixties. I paid $14.95 plus $4.50 shipping. Its absolutely perfect for harp. This one isn't dirty, noisy, nothing! It adds a little fullness, distorts smooth when cranked and picks up hole 1 to 10 and everything inbetween eqauly.
I have bought some that I just tested and threw away, but most of those were from a batch of mics for $9.99 plus shipping. All in all old real to real mics are the last thing that hasn't gotten stupid expensive YET! I have two other mics that came from $9.99 deals on Ebay. For that money its worth a try!

Just a note to say I took an element out of this type of mic and put it in a Shaker and it turned it into a ballsier(fuller sounding) mike for sure.I don,t use it much because of my love for bullet style mics but its another one thats in the arsenal just in case.

@NiteCrawler

was it easy to get the element out or did you need to crack open the case?

I couldn't find any easy way to unscrew the case, but was a little cautious because of the long crack on mine.

Thats true ,.unless your lookin at the Ol' Shure real-real mics as they have the Shure CR's in them & they have gotten stupidly expensive !!
