"we live in an era in which it is important to have opinions. not necessarily smart or original ones; almost any opinion will do as long as it's forcefully expressed.
we post them on Facebook; we tweet them; we express them in comments on Huffington Post.
It wasn't long ago that opinions were something carefully considered and weighed, so that they'd stand the test of time and reflect well on the author.
Thinkers were like gourmet chefs laboring over an elaborate meal they wanted to be perfect.
But today, opinions are like Big Macs- thrown together hastily, served by the billions, and not very good for you."
Stephen Randall in the Los Angeles Times

i really found this food for thought relevant enough to post; given the odd turns threads will sometimes take here on the forum. ----------

And your point IS?

I must add...I rather appreciate all you "assholes".

Whilst the internet has empowered Joe Average to be able to share his knowledge on a global scale; it has, unfortunately, also empowered him to share his ignorance.

When the only way to share your opinion globally was pretty much to write a book, pamphlet, newspaper etc. the process was long and involved. There was ample time to rethink, revise, and rewrite. There was also the knowledge that, when it was finished, your views would be preserved forever on an actual physical object. Nowadays it's a case of typing your views into a small box and clicking 'submit'.

A whole post on an internet forum about the positive and negative of opinion - my sense of irony is telling me not to post it :)

Thoughtful post Nate.

Socrates irritated people by claiming that he only knew that he knew nothing, but that put him ahead of everybody else.

In a similar vein was SBW II. "There's a whole lots of people talking, but there's a mighty few people know."

point?
i thought it was just a well expressed observation. no heavy sigh, no hand wringing- i thought it was cut and dried :)

the boring, tiresomely over-used scatalogical cliche on opinions only serves to reinforce Randalls observation.

.....I'm curious, MP, do you subscribe to the Los Angeles Times at your house.....or did you read this online? This elitist sounds like he is lamely defending the dying print media against the marvelous, egalitarian internet. I, for one, am delighted that average people can get their opinions distributed worldwide minus censorship. We might get to hear something besides the "official" story for a change.

You're very welcome MP, there is not a soul out there who deserves them more...

and thankyou, Chro...
I didn't want to sound too.....like my shit don't stink, ha!
I so appreciate those who honestly lay it on the line, and open their hearts...is more what I should have said. Thanks for reading between the lines.
I get carried away and fail to realize the real world is always lurking in the wings. I should be more direct.
Online forums, and online anythings, can trick you in to thinking you're invincible, and can say anything without reproach..
Although, there are folks who can, and do. It's not a great way to run ones Life.
There are much more rewarding things to occupy my/our spare time,(IMHO, ofcourse).
Like playing harmonica and posting my vids for critique.
Oh...I'm good for now on the harps...thanks again, for doing such a masterful job. They are truly unreal!
You answered my plea for a $50 harp, and for that I am very grateful.

Well, what I seem to take from that is We tend not to think about what we are saying or how we want to say it. Just say it & let it be out there, when @ one point you WOULD take the time to be clear and say what you mean & mean what you say. And to that, I agree.

PS Ive heard the sayin go : options are like assholes.. everyone's got one & they all stink
