Does anyone else have funny little habits when playing? I once saw a guy who'd keep his mouth open and tongue in position whilst constantly taking the harp away from his mouth between phrases. Another guy I saw used to shake his leg at the knee uncontrollably and completely out of time when playing. Mine is lifting my index finger off the cover plate when doing an overblow. I don't know why I do it, but I do. It makes no difference whatsoever. Weird.....

Anyone got anything else?

I raise my eyebrows when I do a warble.
Oh yeah - I hit bad notes and say I did it on purpose>

I will also, occasionally, break into the shaky knee syndrome. Alos, my eyebrows appear to 'conduct' the tune, raising up for high notes, and scrunching down onto my nose when the tune is taking it down low.

On a serious note, my guitar teachings indicate that anything like this may (I repeat may) be an indication of excess tension in the body. If you were to work on eliminating these things you may well find an improvement in your playing.

On the other hand many blue players appear to have had trademark movements that singled them out. Therefore, I suppose, if you wanted to start calling yourself 'Stiff Finger Steve' or something similar you should keep it in the act :)

I go to two different blues jams every week and I have a habit of picking a peticualar object or spot and staring at it as I play. Very seldom do I look at the audiance when I play, it's almost like I'm in a trance to one degree or another. I do pay attention to whomever is leading the song though, that way I don't miss the breaks or end of the tune.

I play harp to avoid my bad habits. I bite my nails if my hands are free.
