Can music cure the common cold??

Tuesday night when I left work at 5pm, I could feel a cold coming on, so I took one Zycam tablet (zinc cure). By the time I was home, I could feel the aches and pains of a mild fever plus a runny nose starting. Determined to have a good time I went to the Tuesday night Harmonica Club meeting at 7. Miraculously, by 9 that night, the fever was gone and my nose was clear again. This morning I’m fine. What was good for my soul was good for my body, OR germs don’t like harmonica music nor the blues.

Now I don't know about the common cold lol- but definitely music as a medium and tool to facilitate stress reduction, pain management, etc. I'm a music therapy major that studied at Florida State U and am now doing an internship at UK HealthCare in Lexington. Then I will be a research assistant and study for my master's at UK. I like to make an awareness to music therapy when possible so here's my little plug!

http://www.musictherapy.org/

I am in the process of working on the final processes of a grant approval for $275,000 to work on a music therapy research study in the hospital. (It helps that the world-renowned lead surgeon is a harp player!) It's a 3 part study including pre and post op stress reduction using therapist guided music relaxation (measured by vitals and self report), ambulation rehab using music as a cue, and the third part is respiratory rehab for thoracic surgery patients using harmonica! I will be leading the research and can post more info once I get started. Currently my internship is at the Children's hospital working with pre and post op, psych unit, NICU and PICU, and cancer patients.

Very interesting. You guys may know that harp is used for patients with lung diseases such as emphysema.

Yeah, there's been a little previous usage/research on using harmonica for respiratory enhancement which is where we got the idea (and because any chance I can use harp with patients I will!) The lead surgeon had wanted to teach them a simple 1st position melody, but I proposed a simple "train" rhythm as I thought it would work better for increasing air flow and use of the lungs. I remember trying to play single notes lip pursing when I started and the air flow was pretty minimal until I learned how.

I had a follow-up post but for some reason during the word-jumble at the end my post screwed up ugh. all that came out was a period lol... hopefully this goes through

Dr. Pete Otaviano is a valued member of our club, and a lung specialist. He has organized harmonica classes for his patients.

Train sounds like a good idea. You can "train" patients to breathe better!

It's a good instrument for asthma. I could see that carrying into clearing out the junk of a cold. Passing a harmonica around would probably work wonders for the old immunity by infection like they used to do for chicken pox. It's also a great instrument if arthritis or carpal tunnel problems rule out other instruments.

Or maybe there is lots of zinc in the covers. :)

Wow, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could get all our harps on scripts subsidised by national health?

Good idea, Aussie! If not Medicare, then health insurers. Subsidised harps, any idea whose time has come. I can see a market opening for a 'Ventilator' harp.
