I have the chance to buy a mint condition Hohner 64 Chromonica from the 50s. It has been played very rarely. Am I just inviting trouble here by buying an old chrom, or is this a worthy purchase? (50 bucks)

I have one that was originally reconditioned by Frank Huang before he left Hohner. The tone is awesome on them, and if it's a pre-WWII model, the windsavers should be made of leather. I much prefer the mouthpiece and slide setup, which is straight tuned, rather than the cross tuned setup they've been using since they stopped making the wood combed version since the late 60's.

There are plenty of chromatic customizers around also like Steve Pruitt and Dick Gardner and anyhing they can do is worth every single penny.

It definitely has a wood comb. If the wind savers are leather, will they still be good? Or am I in for a big project of replacing them?

i have a hohner chro from the '20s where the leather dried, cracked, and literally fell apart. i'd be prepared for the same deal on your harp.

With leather windsavers, that's definitely a pre-WWII chromatic. Do yourself a favor, if it needs work, send it to guys like Dick Gardner, Steve Pruitt, or Michael Fathead Easton, who are top notch chromatic customizers/technicians and it'll be worth EVER penny.

The best seal in the world was leather, but when the leather gets dried up, it can crack and curl like mad.
