So is it even possible to compose an original 12 bar blues anymore ? It would seem that every possible combination has been done. Original lyrics should be no problem, but what about the music ? Probably a dumb question. Heavy Weights please weigh in. Captain ?

Of course it's possible. Every tune that's ever been composed has been made up of the same handfull of notes.

Remember, you can choose from a whole slew of rhythm patterns, syncopate them, play ahead or behind the beat, and choose whatever notes in the chord you want to play without breaking any of the 'rules' of 12 Bar, and then you can break the rules! After all, 12 Bar isn't about strictly following the rules. It's a system so that you can walk up on stage in front of a new band, call a key and a rhythm and play your song. Is long as you let them know you are switching keys part way through and changing the rhythm on your signal and abruptly stopping half way through the third time through to work the crowd for a few seconds and for the guitar player to switch to banjo, the bass player to breath fire, and the drummer to take out a violin it's all good.

Nate's right, and if you don't do it quite like that, someone else will!
