Sometimes I use those little plastic toothpick/floss thingies as a jaw harp when I'm done cleaning my teeth. I hold it flat with the pick end sticking out of my mouth and pluck it. You can adjust the pitch by adjusting how far you put it in your mouth. I've wondered if you could cross a jaw harp with a harmonica by putting the jaw harp reed on the front of the harmonica. Maybe holding the harmonica would provide enough support to not need to put the teeth bustin' part in your mouth, but still let you effect the tone with your mouth shape. Or not. I get all sorts of weird ideas.

I've played a Jews Harp for more than 40 years. Yeah, if you don't hold it correctly you can ding a tooth. Here's the deal, rest the harp up against your teeth, they shouldn't protude into the path of the tongue (or twanger). Don't pluck the tongue really hard, the sound and volume should come from the soundbox, your mouth. Have fun with it, try different strum patterns, use your harp skills to vary the tone and sound. I play a little differently than most, but you can find all sorts of examples online. We even have a facebook group.
