I was in the neighborhood grocery store this afternoon and the harp-driven opening of the Fabulous Thunderbirds' version of "Winter Wonderland" came over the speakers. Pretty strange to hear the song in that environment. It was part of a 1983 local record called "An Austin Rhythm and Blues Christmas," which was reissued by Epic in 1986 after they decided everything Austin was hot. The album is uneven--they were unable to get SRV--but the T-Birds also do a version of Hop Wilson's "Merry Christmas Baby," with Kim playing chromatic and Jimmie Vaughan putting a rare instance of pedal steel on record. It's on iTunes, etc.
Kudos to whoever was programming the store's background music. I didn't notice any reaction from the other shoppers.
