I need to buy a new 1/4"-to-1/4" guitar cord, and an XLR mic cable. Obviously some are dirt cheap and some cost an arm and a leg. What's a good solid brand to look out for? I don't need gold plated, wound on the thigh of a Swedish super model kind of cords. I just want something solid that sounds good and will last. You know, like the SM57 of cords. Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know much about cables, but I saw a consumer-program here in Norway where they tested HiFi-cables. They had an interview with the president of the Norwegian HiFi-club and he told that there was a big difference between cheap and expensive cables. The more they cost, the better they are,in general. And then came the test...lol.. He could not hear the difference! And he had to pick one he thought sounded best. And it was the cheapest!! So I'll be glad if someone can shed a little light on this matter :)
Does this go for instrument-cables as well? Or do you get what you pay for?

sound is a funny thing and your ears can play tricks on you so you might not be able to tell much difference in the sound of a couple of cables.
if you buy a cheap cable and it stays connected and doesn't get wound up night after night it might last a very long time. the way most cables are mistreated, like being wound to tight for example, i always bought the best cable i could and that usually was the higher priced one. i found the plugs were mostly soldered better also.

Thanks, guys. I also have a 1/4"-to-screw-on mic cable from Greg H. for my 520 and JT-30 and I agree, it's very very solid. The cable I'm replacing were lost.
