Hi Nick, it's a well known problem with MB combs. Some people trim them back once they have swollen, some people swap the combs for other materials, some people spend hours and hours sealing with mineral oils, smoothing down etc. Search the forum for MB combs and you'll have enough reading to see you through to this time next year.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

HBIP, the first thing to do is make sure you aren't spitting too much when you play. Sometimes you get a comb that swells more than others (something about where in the tree the wood is cut from), and a combination of spit and a comb prone to it can mean disaster. You could take the harp apart carefully, let it dry out, treat it with butcher's block oil (you want the stuff without the chemical drying agents so it's totally non-toxic.) and let it dry, sand it down and put the thing back together. Adam has a video on opening up a MB carefully. If the nails are loose when you put it back together you can put a match stick or a toothpick in the hole before you put it back together.

If that's too much, you can just take a razor blade and carefully scrape along the front of the harp to take off what is sticking out. A harp that swells a lot will tend to have problems over time as the cycle of drying and swelling will loosen up the nails and make it leaky.

The other, slightly more expensive option, is to buy a custom comb. You can buy sealed combs or plastics, or several other materials. (Randy Sandoval and Chris Reynolds are the two members that come to mind.)

The first step though, is definitely see if trying not to slobber helps! :)

If you go the custom comb route, you can find a list of customizers in the Thread Organizer link in my signature, under 'Customizers'.

Hi Harp boy. My two last purchases are MB, key of C two months ago and Bb two days ago. They are both great harps I play them srtait OOTB, in fact I think my C has turned me in a MB guy, I'm a fairly dry player and both harp have never swell.
