I'm trying to edit a wave file down to size, but every time I try to open or import it Audacity crashes! It's a wave file, about 45 megs, but my computer should be able to handle that. Any ideas? (It's a recording of 3 songs that I want to separate into the separate songs.)

If you don't care too much about quality, convert the file to mp3, and then import it.

Tf, what do you do if you only know how to convert a song to mp3 using Audacity?

There are also a bunch of free programs on the internet that will do it for you. I use some program called ACE converter. It has worked out quite well.

Have you got WaveStudio? If so, import, split and export as three seperate wav files?

Thanks guys. I used one of the online converters. Thanks for the idea. (I don't have iTunes.)

Edit- Tooka, I probably have it somewhere. Funny, the whole purpose was to turn it into three parts! (It was a recording of three songs from an open mic.)

Nate... what version of Audacity are you using ?

I'm using Verison 1.3.9 Beta, and it opened a WAV file okay (it was 60,121KB).

Vlc is a great little media player that can play almost anything without relying on external plugins or codecs. It's handy because it can also convert files from one format to another.

It's Free-Libre Open Source software and is a very quick download.

Airmojo, 1.2.6, looks like it's time for me to upgrade. Arzajac, I'll look into that.

seems odd that such a little file would cause problems. i routinely open multiple gigabyte wav files (1GB wav is about 1.5 hours) on my (linux) machine.

I've always had problems with Audacity crashing in Windows. I had problems with my old machine with XP. It's been better with more RAM and Windows 7.

I have had less crashing problems with the 1.2 version. I have a 5 year old computer, XP with one gig ram. I say Audacity is fine.

It does seem more prone to crashing when I have 6 to 8 tracks I'm trying to tweak at one time.

Nate - It sounds like your version of Audacity may be messed up. I've been able to import wav files much larger than that into Audacity.
