I got thinking about some clunkers that I just drop in my shirt pocket (if they go they go) and wondered if others kept beat up clunkers for such a purpose? Do you buy one once in while just as a cast off? What are your favorite junk bin harps?

IMHO it's pointless/frustrating/counter-productive to practice on a crappy instrument.

If you're concerned about losing an expensive harp, custom or otherwise, get a less expensive, good quality harp like a Harpmaster, Bluesmaster or even a Sp20 and emboss/gap it yourself. AND keep it in a pocket where it's relatively safe. A shirt pocket is likely a poor choice.

Curious, how many out there have lost there "always carry" harp? I haven't after many years, touch wood ...

At the moment i carry around a Manji in G or a Seydel Solist Pro. I don't carry around junk harps, if i'm out and about and come across a Spontaneous jam or a friend asks me to play something, i want it to sound good and i want a harp thats easy to play.

When i first started to learn to play i used to carry a rubish £5 harp around with me and keep my "good" Lee Oskar harp at home but it was a false economy. I'd be nervous if asked to play and a £5 harp really didnt help the situation and made it harder to play.

If never lost or damaged a harp whilst i'm out and about and i'm not into extreme sports like base jumping whilst practicing the Blues scale so hopefully any damage to my harp should be minimal lol!! buti always carry a decent harp wherever i go:o)

My Maine Junky Harp :)
My Maine Junky Harp

It is awful to play, but really helps with your technique because it pinches you if you play your bends too flat or too sharp. The barnacles really tear your lips up, but the salt water infusion comb quickly heals any injuries.

I purchased it from Captain Blackbeard's Pirate Shanty Music Emporium. It comes in one key -- Arrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Okay, I'm done now.

Love it! I live by the ocean, beach gatherings and all. I've found sand and harps don't go well together (maybe the "claw harp" would come in handy? Lol), as well as sometimes partying too much and forgetting where you placed it! Lol

My go-to junky harp is the Big River. With a little gapping work, it can also be made into a decent harp. I play them through the winter while walking outdoors. I've never destroyed one yet.

I have one "C" that I use. It's better to get accustomed to one instrument rather than having a bunch of them in the same key.

I have a Suzuki Folkmaster in Ab which I love. I have tweaked it & opened up the back to give more volume. It's a sweet sounding harp the same dimensins as a Marine Band. My Folkmaster is strictly my beer & crisps harp ie if I destroy it then it's only a few dollars. But I can't kill it after years of abuse!

I own one that I would truly classify as 'junky', which to me means 'non-playable'...One time a couple years ago, I needed a backup harp in C on the day of a gig. i stopped by a local store, and all the guy had was a Johnson with a clear comb(which I did find cool)for 3 bucks. I knew it wouldn't be a suitable backup, but I bought it on a whim, and because I had three dollars burning a hole in my pocket. WOW, what a piece of shit!

I have a 'Melisa & Doug' tremolo I bought at a ice cream shop. I wanted to open up a tremolo and look around inside. Melisa & Doug should be put in front of a firing squad. They should not be offered earplugs. The firing squad should be composed of children with Melisa & Doug harmonicas and earplugs. I can think of no other punishment severe enough.

When I carry a harp "just in case", it's usually my old bluesharp in Bb.
