The element in one of my mics says-
Astatic
Ceramic
It has a large black stamp that reads 127
It has a smaller purple stamp that reads 1257

Thanks

It sounds like a newer 127 ceramic element( I have one, too)-does it also have a sticker that says MC-151? As for the purple stamp, it couldn't be the date, as crystals were made then (December of 1957), so maybe it's a batch number or something.

Todd, yours sounds like a regular late Astatic 151, these were all made on the "127" casting, hence the 151 sticker. Ceramics all have a lower output than a properly working crystal, so if you have a 127 with a big output, it's more likely that the 151 sticker has come/been taken off.

No 151 sticker- just the one that says Astatic, Ceramic and something about heat and moisture resistance. There is somewhat of a space between the 12 and 57 that is stamped on the sticker. the 127 is stamped on the element itself.
It does have a low output, but to me that's a good thang for the house.

it's a ceramic not a crystal. its best to go by the rubber and/or paper stamps. later crystals did come in a ceramic(127 is plainly embossed into the metal) caseing- as 5F6H says, but this is not the case(no pun intended). the mic tag itself below the grille should read JT-30-C if it is original.

MP, I'm confused. How do you know it is not ceramic? I was told the only way to know it was a crystal once they were making 151's in the 127 casting was if it had the MC-151 sticker, which apparently Hondo's doesn't.... ??

gregg,
i think it is a ceramic. if it were a crystal, it wouldn't have a 127 ink stamp.

also, it's unlikely to have both a 127 ink stamp with an allegedly missing 151 paper sticker.

i could see how one could wind up with the embossed 127 (sans ink stamp 127) with a missing 151 sticker though.
it's common.
