Got to hear Jesus Music pioneer, blues hall o fame, and Horner hall o fame (akd his biz card) Darrell Mansfield play last night here in Honolulu at a small bar called Snappers. He sat in w/veteran local band Simplicity.
Lots of stage presence for sure! He did an interesting feedback thing, like a rock guitarist, into his amp w/his mic while playing. Also lots of delay pedal! The bar crowd really liked it. http://www.reverbnation.com/darrellmansfieldband
Here is a vid of him playing a different venue.....last night was similar to this vid.
Hi Capt! no sheet!? Crazy haole! Darell is a cool guy, too. (needs a hair cut). I had a great conversation with him several years back. Back when Sand Island R&B was in it's last days..RIP. He sat in with Henry Kapono's band, at Don Ho's place on the beach, too. He needed a back up amp, incase his amp blew out. Or something like that. I loaned him mine. He didn't need it. But can he play. Very musical and not over the top. I think he has a girl friend, and her mother... who live in the Kalia apts. He down plays the Jesus thing, and doesn't preach at all. I like that. Every person to his own beliefs. Yeah, his style is precise, melodic, and he does that stacato thing with the high notes....tastey run..not easily done. Pretty tricky. MP can do it, too. He does real well with it and it fits nicely in this song.
Darrell was an influence on me in my first couple years of playing, because he was the first player I heard playing amplified, and the first blues player I heard. I'm not crazy about the Popper style high licks sometimes, but he pulls it off pretty well at times and has a great voice.
your talking about the lick at 1:53..., 2:26....4:04...and closes with it, too, right? that's where he narrows his embochure, then draws and blows using only his tongue. Pretty cool thing to know if you ever need it. Not terribly difficult.... ..but it would take alot of practice, for me, to achieve a level like that. I think he did say, he stole that from you MP.
yeah Mojokane, i kinda rushed through and skipped parts. he does quite a few long wailing notes that i know CaptJon really digs, and these are interspersed with rapid fire upper register flash.
Todd, when i first heard Popper i thought of Sugar Blue, and to a lesser extent, Norton Buffalo and Charlie McCoy.
years ago i saw a music magazine with Popper and Sugar Blue doing a joint interview. as soon as i saw the cover photo of those two i said to myself" i thought so!"
the interview had Popper saying he more or less studied Sugar Blues solo on the Rolling Stones "Miss You". both players agreed that most players at the time didn't utilize the whole harp. boy!, have things changed! ---------- MP hibachi cook for the yakuza doctor of semiotics superhero emeritus
