If you're just looking for an effects pedal that works then for $300 there are a lot of options, and you will probably be much happier with them. But maybe it's the DIY aspect that attracted you to this pedal?

I think that Eric Moyer just fell in love with the Parallax Propeller (http://forums.parallax.com/) and wanted to make an effects pedal, so he went with it. But the propeller isn't the best choice for DSP work - and as far as I know he hasn't been able to attract many developers. He also didn't put much RAM in this pedal so looping is quite limited. As far as I know you will be writing parallax propeller assembly code if you want to make your own effects with this pedal. It's not for everyone, but it's easy to learn if you're into this sort of thing.

if you're into hacking DSP code, then you should also look at something like the Line 6 ToneCore DSP developer kit which is $200. I don't know much about this and it also has limitations, but maybe you stand a chance of selling your effects through Line 6 if you come up with something nice, or you could find some way to get them out to the world at large.

If you're a DIYer then you could also look at iPhone/Android development. There are now guitar connection kits at least for the iPhone. An 8 GB iPod touch is only $200 so it's also less than the Coyote and if the effects don't work out then you can still get apps like the Amazing Slow Downer, 4 track recorders, tuners, iRealBook, load your sheet music (would be hard to read), various synthesizers, it records video and you can run iMovie on it, etcetera.

But if you want to make music, need a pedal form factor, and don't want to fiddle with 0xABADC0DE then I would stay away from the above. You can get a Digitech RP355 for $200 and spend a little for something like Richard Hunter's patches. Then you're up in no time. Or the other pedals that are mentioned from time to time.

Another option is a laptop. You can use it for all sorts of other stuff and if you really want a pedal to control it you can get a USB pedal and assign buttons to it.

thanks guys, i had a multi effects processor (another brand, slightly cheaper) and did not like some of it.. found it a bit feedback prone. Also the expression pedal had such rough digital steps it really did not sound great.. does the Digitech RP355 suffer from those problems?
