I know this is a general question, but maybe you guys and girls could put me on the right path.

It depends on what you want for size, etc.

I've grown up with Richter tuning, but Jim is making me a nice Seydel chrom with a 'sensible/logical' tuning of his own that sounds good.......check em' out :~)

Yes I do, just follow the path in my signature.

In general, there is no magic potion tuning-wise. You can't tell if it works for you or not until you try.

The Hohner CX 12 is a nice easy harmonica to play and sounds very good. Back when I was trying alot of different Chroms I found that one to be the easiest to sustain vibrato with. It is expensive! I play Hohner 260 10 hole chromatic. I like that one for a few reasons. One its cheap like me! Two I don't use holes 11 and 12 anyway. Third its small enough where I can a good seal playing the lower notes while holding a mic and get a good powerful amplified sound. Did I mention its cheap?

The suzuki chromatics have good reputation, but I never played one.

My next chrom is going to be the Suzuki scx64.

I own a Hohner 270 deluxe, which has been a very nice one. Has screws instead of nails and has round holes instead of square. I am fairly new to chromatic - so take it for what it is worth. I have enjoyed it very much. It is certainly one to look at.

I only wish I had picked the tenor version or had a full 16 holes. I want those low notes!

I'll second that,a tenor is the way to go,in the key of C. Those shrill upper notes are bothersome.

Yeah I'm with you on that one Silvertone, but I do like holes 9 and 10. I learned the Little Walter 9-10 Warble when I first started play the chrom and just have to have it.
My ideal chrom would be a 12 holer with two extra low holes. This would enable the player to do the turn around in third position. Like playing draw 5 blow 4 draw 3. You have that starting with draw 1 then the two extra low holes. That would be nice!
Also I would swap the notes around in the 4 and 8 holes. Move the blow reeds to the draw and visa versa.
Nothing is easy!

If you live in Europe, I can sell you Hohner Chromonika II (12 holes, C) or Hohner Chromonica I (10 holes, G) for 60 euros+postage. I have cleaned the plates, sealed the combs and fixed the valves on these. 2 month guarantee included (I'll fix it if there will be any issues with the harp).

I'm also considering which Chromatic to buy. Winslow Yerxa published a two part series "Chromatic for Diatonic Players" a year ago.

MP have ever had a CX-12? They are very nice harps. They aren't built like all the other Hohner Chroms. German Harpist might be able to help me here. There is an award that the German government gives out every year. Its an engineering award I think? Anyway Porsche use to win this award almost every year. When Hohner come out with the CX-12 they won the award! That was a big deal back then. I know GH is to young to remember when it happened, but maybe he knows what award I'm talking about. I read the article after Hohner won the award and thought thats worth a try. Tried it and played them for 8 years. The first one I bought was $120. There more than twice that now and thats why I don't use them anymore, but they certainly are not leaky!

chromaticblues,

yeah, i've tried a couple and they have a nice design for taking them apart, but i don't care for the sound at all.

there is something cheap sounding about them to my ears. no beauty in the tone(perhaps all that teflon or whatever they use).

but that's a personal observation, and they are a not bad option.

i think you can get seydel deluxes for $139 before shipping and taxes which puts you just under $150.

Windsaver/ valves can be trouble and stick easily with me - worth considering if you intend playing outside.

Am I right in thinking the Hohner 260 has no windsaver/ valves? Are there any other models without them?

Seydel chromaticDeluxe has same quality valves as their top model SAXONY. Those valves are a century ahead of any other valve material.

Yeah MP I luckily bought a gold one just because it looked cool. Well I didn't know and most people don't that the gold CX-12's are different than the black CX-12's. The Gold option has chrome plated reedplates and chrom tape inside top and bottom of the main body. These harps don't sound like what your talking about. I didn't know the difference and bought two black harps for back ups because I liked the gold on so much. The black harps sucked! I guess thats why the gold CX-12 cost more.

MP and Jim - thanks for talking about the Seydel Chromatic Deluxe. It turns out that Rockin Ron's carries them, so I'm going to order one for my first chromatic. (He is extremely responsive to email!)

@KeithEs:
it's a good instrument. And most importantly - it is UPGRADABLE. You can easily buy and install a Saxony mouthpiece afterwards and get a super-professional chromatic.

here's mine (a semi-saxony but with brass reeds...)

I have a Brendan Power CX-12. My one regret is that I didn't get a 16 hole. Would love to have that bottom octave.
