I may get raked over the coals on this one. Ive been working on this 2-3 weeks. A new style for me.
Any constructive critique & criticism are very welcome. also if its terrible , say so, Id rather hear it from yall, than play it out somewhere & get guffawed

Brave attempt stevej, at least you put it out there. I'm in no position to comment except to say I don't think you are far off from cracking it.

I've often wondered if the whoops should be on an inward breath? That's the only way I can do them. I find I can't do them on an outward breath.

Ok, guess it sucks, I will try to come up with something better. I am aiming at being able to play passable , just by myself, guess I will try a different way of getting there,
you never know unless you try:)

I've been trying to learn to do the same thing Steve. I can only whoop blowing out. I love the way Sonny Terry doea it with a strong groove. To me it is as much a rhythm thing as an effect or note.
I won't do mine until I feel it is groovin enough to make people want to tap their feet. Much harder than I thought. Keep it at it Man!

I've noticed some whoopers whoop notes that fit into the music tonally and others just sort of bark. The best ones sound like a pack of dogs instead of just one dog, so you need to develop a couple different dogs. Also experiment with barking through the harp versus pulling it away for a second or barking out the side of your mouth to see what gives you the best sound. If none of that works, you may want to try eating dog biscuits for a week or two. It's like method acting. You want to get into character. :)

Good stuff Steve.
Open your hands up and let the sound out.
Only close them to get an effect or tonal change.

Here's a video on how I whoop.
I lean heavily on Paul Lambs' "Whoop and Holler"

Oh forgot to mention on the video. Its all tongue blocked. "A" harp in the key of E.

Sounds like you're off to a great start! All there is is to keep playing with it.

That style is a world unto itself, I'm sure you will get a lot of good breath control out of it.

Keep up the great work!

Don't feel like a moron, if you hadn't posted, you wouldn't have gotten any help :o)

We are all novices and its a never ending journey as I continue to learn every time I pick up a harp.

Keep it up !
