I was looking for some good harp playing. That was about my only criteria. I can't decide between Gaukur and Heart2Harp ,so I'm calling it a tie for them. Everyone did a great job! Very entertaining, guys!

Wow--this one was the first one I didn't enter--I've been real busy making my second CD--due out next week--but no harp and all Christmas tunes--the approach is pretty bluesey, but nothing appropriate for this event.
But I did take the time to listen to the entries today--kind of a quick through and then go back and hit my high points. I judged strictly on what was entertaining to me--no other criterion at all.
1--gauker--just a great job all around
2--geordiebluesman--cool song and a good delivery
3--Earlounge--great one man overdub--and a nice job on the video too.
A lot of great stuff in this one--I think a lot of people around here are getting better. I'll get into the woodshed and try to come up with something for the next one--but a big "Well Done" goes out to all of you who stepped up and played for this one. . . ----------

1. earlounge - just love the damn song , groovy as hell ,every time I listen to it it makes me my day ( I have it in my mp3 player, thanks for the download link).I really dig the sound of the Alvarez , how did you record the guitar ? mic or pickup ?
2.heart2harp - I like your voice a lot , 10 times better than a lot of the professional harp players that sing too.
3.Isaacullah - your song puts a smile on my face, and that's all I need. I think that is more to this song that you made out of it ,I would like to see you work some more on it ...if you run out of ideas , leave it aside and come back to it later . Listen to the song without the solo harp and try to sing to it , you might come up with some fresh licks.
Thanks to the people that voted for my entry , but it wasn't really much to it , it was literally a one take in the last second , I was at work on a Saturday night , and after seeing the effort and energy that tooka put into this contest , in one of my work breaks I grabbed my phone/camera , jumped into my car ( kudzurunner style, I might have to start paying royalties) and give it a try. For those that don't know the song , it's a Charlie Sayles song ,if the name it's not very familiar to you, you can go here Charlie Sayles and you can listen to parts of his whole album ( there's also a downloading link if you want to buy it) , and don't forget he is gonna be a part of the Hill Country Harmonica this year.

Sorin-thanks so much for the compliment-but that wasn't me-I don't even play guitar. You got me mixed up with someone else. (I think the greatest compliments I receive are meant for others :-/ ) I did what you did-but less. One take, but it was also unrehearsed improvisation-made up on the spot. If I had done more than one take, I would have at least got my whole head in the shot!
Now, for my vote. There are some good voices/multiinstrumentalists here, but I judged solely on harp content.
Without further adieu:
3.Heart2Harp-you sir, are stunningly talented. 2.Ant-I've enjoyed watching your progress-you've really got it going on! 1.Jodanchudan-It just won me over, all around.
Honorable mention-Gaukur & KingoBad(very entertaining!)
Coolness factor- Earlounge-if this was a catchiest tune competition, you'd win-hands down. That was plain cool. Isaac-very nice looping and playing.
Ballsiest choice of tune: MAL-wow, there's a lot of bends of all types in there!
The 'I want to hear the finished product' award goes to: Nacoran
Camilo-I am still craving wings for some reason...
All did well, and I think these BYBO things are a great exercise for all involved. For me, recording myself is many times more stressful than playing for a live audience face-to-face. Dunno why, but it is.
Tooka, thanks for being the 'The Man'.

@Sorin: Thank you for the vote, praise, and advice! I will most definitely keep working on the song. I think you are 100% correct in your assessment. I will try the singing advice, it may be just what I need to do!
@toddlgreene: Thanks man! I appreciate it!

isaac-you should consider(if you havven't already)doing your OMB/harp box compositions into some decent recording software, if not just going into a studio-I'd like it for sure. ----------

@todd: You are right, I definitely should do that. I can connect my RP155 straight into my computer via USB. I recently got a new computer on which I use the Ubuntu Studio OS, which is a Linux OS specifically designed for high end multimedia processing. This includes an ultra-low latency kernel, JACK (which lets you route audio through all kinds of internal software filters, effects, recording, etc.), and Ardour, which is a powerful DAW akin to ProTools. My main problem is time! I have to figure out how all the software works, then I have to get everything linked up and calibrated and do some tests before I can start recording stuff! I've had the system since last summer, but I just haven't had enough time to start messing with it. I'm hoping to be able to do at least some of this stuff over the winter break. At least to the point where I can make a few decent recordings...
I'm also slowly acquiring the right paraphernalia to make a little lo-fi studio in my home. I just got a mic stand, and I'm about to get a couple of decent mics for micing amps and stuff... I'm doing this all on the uber-cheap, so it's been taking a while. But once I get all my gear sorted, then I definitely plan to start doing some better recordings! ---------- --------------------------------------

Just sat down and listened to all the entries--congratulations to all who entered.
3.IsaacUllah--Wow Isaac, I admire your progress. 2.Gaukur--best pure harp playing in the contest 1.Heart2harp--had been thinking that your singing was far better than your harping until the last minute or so, then was totally blown away (as usual)
Honorable mentions to Sorin, Ant138, Germanharpist. Germanharpist--that was inspiring! Kingobad--you're real close to being real bad!

Todd Thats a good question. For me personally I prefer to hear a tune rather than sort of 'chugging and wailing' for want of a better description.
There used to be a UK TV programme called 'the old grey whistle test' I heard that the title referred a 'test' for a song as to whether after a couple of hearings the old [grey haired] man would be able to whistle the tune. That kind of sums it up for me, does the improvised playing [or a prewritten tune for that matter] have a recogniseable [definable?] tune?
Someone can be the bestest player in the whole world technically, but if all they do is to play lots of clever 'stuff' which doesn't gel together as a tune however much in tune with the chords it is, it just doesn't do it for me.
not sure why I need to justify myself but there you go, I know what I like and a lot of those didn't float my boat.

Took,
I was gonna pitch in and tabulate the results for you, but in eyeballing it, a fair amount of people ignored what I thought were your fairly straightforward and clear voting instructions (vote for one - or up to three in descending order).
I have no idea how you'll sort this out.
Good luck though, and thanks for running this thing.

Thanks @Honkin. Yes there were a few which didn't abide by the non-rules and I have read between the lines in their posts and worked out their preferences as near as I could and awarded points accordingly.
German Harpist has very kindly volunteered to do a verifying check-through of the results and we can compare what we both arrive at.
If we both come up with a comparable ball-park figure, then that's it. If we disagree wildly then it will be Plan 'B'.
Ideas for Plan 'B' anyone? ----------

Okay, Lumpy-I didn't mention it above, but I liked your staccato-esque beginning, and how it built up into the tune.
See? I just bumped you out of your own bracket! ;-) ----------

Todd Oh Dear, Dy cunning plan failed then. The first bit of my entry was supposed to sound like I was completely rubbish at playing and then it was supposed to ramp up. I don't think I got enough contrast between the rubbish and the mediocre playing at the end. For added rubbish it was originally going to be Oh Suzannah, but I didn't work out the second bit and I play 'riverside' at open mics sometimes I was interested to see what people would say about it. I know my limitations.

H2H gets my vote. He's got the whole package; music clearly coming from deep inside. Something to aspire to. Thanks for the constructive criticism guys, especially Isaac. You are very perceptive. I didn't have a backing track in my head but I did have a mental metronome! (Dunno if that was in time though).
All up, an enjoyable if nerve-wracking experience. Big thanks to Tooka for organising.
