I've known for a long time that the transfers I made from the original Nat Riddles street recordings were less than optimal, but a redo is incredibly time intensive. Still, some day I intend to do that, and the process began today.
I started with Nat's 11-minute version of "Easy," since it's always been one of my favorite cuts.
I transferred it from the original tape cassette into Garage Band, then saved the .aif file as an mp3 at 256 kbs. That makes for a very large mp3--about 20 mbs--but it sounds great. Like my original set of transfers, these are slightly flat, because the Walkman Professional that I used was slightly faster than the playback deck. Nat's playing an A harp, but you'll need to speed it up slightly if you want to jam along with it. (On the album I'm currently selling, all the cuts have been brought up to proper pitch, even if they don't sound nearly as good as this one.)
For the record: when I finally do the re-transfers, I will send a link for a free download to everybody who has ever purchased the "old" album.
Here's the link. Feel free to share it with folks on other forums. Happy Thanksgiving.

@Adam - aside from the technical issues you site, such as pitch, speed and what not, I have to say... to ME this is the epitome of blues harp playing and reinforces why I took such an interest in the blues harp. Just a harp, guitar and vocal. This oozes raw soul.
The street sounds (traffic, birds chirping, people 'chatter' etc.) only add to the overall flavor of the cut.
Yeah, I may be a newbie and all but I have listened to all kinds of music for years, including blues. But now with more focus on the harp, listening to or should I say RE-listening to blues all have a new feel since being bitten by the harp bug ;-)
..too melodramatic? lol.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting this. I agree with ReedSqueal that the simple setup oozes raw soul. It's a great recording - his tone (Cotton-like, I think - anyone agree?) and phrasing are really something to aim for. Reminds me why I started learning the harp.

This is great! Such wonderful playing, and the voice is so soulful. I had heard very little Nat Riddles before this.
Thanks for that.
It's pretty easy to change the pitch on an audio file without speeding it up or slowing it down.
Would that have distorted the quality?

I don't know. You tell me! What method do you use? Please share info. I assumed that those who wanted to would use the Amazing Slow Downer, but I'm sure there are other methods and I'd love to learn about them. Garage Band won't let me change the pitch on a Real Instrument track, strangely.

Here's how I do it when I am in the middle of recording a song and realize that, say, a certain track doesn't allow me to get the vocal timbre I want, or something, and I am too lazy to re-record:
Audacity and some other recording programs have a function called "change pitch." This touches up the pitch without changing the speed. Indeed, if it is only a little bit flat, you probably wouldn't need to even change the pitch so much as correct it, which is a bit more annoying (depending on what's going on, you might have to go note by note).
Audacity is free to download, in case you're curious.
Hope this helps, and I'm still loving the track!

Adam: Ctrl-alt-G changes the track so you can edit it.
check the "Follow tempo and pitch" and you'll be able to adjust the pitch slider.
The slider jumps in 1 semitone increments; I'm not sure that'll be subtle enough for the changes you need to make, but the enhance tuning slider might help.
