Ran a deep scan for an hour and fifteen minutes on Saturday. I found no viruses on my Mac. I used IAntivirus. It does a quick scan daily and updates weekly automatically. I think comcast gives its customers Norton for free.

Nortons is a virus, IMO. I had to trash it off my mother's computer when she decided not to pay for it anymore it decided to not allow her to save her wireless password & wouldn't let her connect to the internet. Once Nortons was gone all was good. Not to mention the resources Nortons hogs.
I use two things right now I'd recommend no problem. Both are free and can be run on macs & pcs.
Avast! Antivirus for keeping bad sites from downloading trash to my computer. It auto updates quite often. You can also pay for a professional version if you're running a network.
and
Super Anti Spyware for doing both quick and full scans of my pc for any malware.

I have used GNU/Linux since 2001 and have never run an antivirus on my computer.
I am amazed at how slowly Windows and Mac computers run. It's like living in the third world. How do people live like that?
My colleague bought herself a netbook with Windows 7. It's limited by Windows to 1 Gig of ram. It is unusable. I put Ubuntu on it and she couldn't be happier. It runs as fast as any other modern computer. And when she adds a 2 gig ram stick, it will run even faster.
...But I digress...

Thanks Ryan now I'm glad I didn't download it.LOL Norton screwed up a bunch of the computers at community college about six months ago. They thought it was a virus attack but it was Norton messing up. LOLLLLLLLL ----------

My intel mac runs like a champ and I'm sure the new Macs with the I3 and I5 chips smoke everybody. I can multitask several videos with hardly a dent in CPU usage. I run intense audio and video programs with no problems. The internet is smokin' and the only problem is if comcast gets overloaded. ----------

I'm running Mac OS/X on a 3.06 Ghz Core Duo processor. I too have NEVER had a virus problem with a Mac. I am very careful about not opening unknown attachments, or even letting my email software download images without my consent.
Recently I downloaded a highly rated anti-virus product called Sophos - it is free. It scanned my over 900,000 files - and found only one questionable file, which, upon further investigation, was a Java hack that would only have caused me damage if I was running Windows.
Still, although the Mac's defenses are indeed better than Windows, it is only a matter of time before "IT" happens so I decided to give this a try so I'm glad to have it.
I've had the Norton stuff for Mac - slow and in the way so much that I ended up un-installing it. ---------- /Greg

I've used Macs about 20 years. At work I have an i5 MAcbook that's just awesome. At home it's a white Macbook and an aging G4 tower. Never had a virus in all those years, but have been told that there are a few new Trojans which exploit Java on Macs, so the days of complacency are over. I use iAntivirus which is free - seems to work fine.

Greg, Macs defenses are not better than Windows! When tested at hacker conventions Macs fall first, then Linux, and finally Windows. Mac survives because of simple economics. Someone writing a virus can write a virus for Mac in X amount of time and target 5-10% of the market, or write a virus for a Windows machine in maybe 2X amount of time and get 90% of the market. It's just a business decision. Mac will get toasted the minute that equation tips to equal, particularly because lots of Mac users don't run antiviruses.

Macs will have viruses soon. The more we buy them - the higher are the chances. And when one appears - it will do insane damage. Mac users are not used to such things right? Entering root password for apps without fear right?
I have a 3,0ghz c2d hackintosh by the way...
Built it specifically to run macos. I've used 3 systems including a number of linux builds. Keyboard shortcuts and the quality of apps is what makes the difference for me. Apart from that - xubuntu is the way to go.

A great application for macs is Little Snitch. Basically it is a reverse firewall and will intercept any application trying an external connection which you haven't authorised. It's a shareware app - $30 I think.

@nacoran - I agree with you. I never meant to imply that Mac had superior defense and agree what drives hackers is the size of the market which is why they generally target Windoze. I also believe it will happen sooner or later which is why I decided to install Sophos.
And +1 on LittleSnitch - I have had that running for a long time. It is really interesting to see how often regular old apps go out to the internet without telling you about it. ---------- /Greg

I would class Norton as expensive malware, and it has a footprint bigger than Canada.
I use AVG free. ---------- Andrew, gentleman of leisure, noodler extraordinaire.

You guys are too funny. I've been preaching to everyone I know to stop paying for Norton. It protects you by slowing your computer down so it's unusable.
I work on computers all day long, Windows and Mac... I have Win7 on my work computer and second computer with Linux Mint. I haven't made the Linux switch on my personal PC, but more and more I am thinking about it.
I <3 Combofix, Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials.
