Hmmm,.. many people are on this forum to learn... and just as many people are on this forum to share.
So instead of typing long questions and responses, why not do it directly, 1 on 1, via skype?
(We tried a forum chat with skype, but it can't really handle more than 6-7 people at once..)
Check out my channel (in my profile), if you think that I could teach you something and you wish to have a chat about technique, customizing, harp resources on the internet, forum politics... or whatever, let's talk!
This is of course free of charge.
My skype handle is georginbraunschweig and I'd have time tomorrow (saturday) evening/night, eastern time. EDIT: ok, I messed up. It's not saturday evening (cos that would be in the middle of the night for me, but from morning 10am to late afternoon 4pm eastern. For an hour or two..
I should mention as a disclaimer, that I haven't had a regular teacher yet. All I learned was from Youtube, reading the internets, and following this forum for quite a while. Btw. I'm quite proficient in music theory. So if that's what you're interested in...
Maybe I'm the only one that feels that this is a good idea,... but if there's anybody else that wants to offer some of their time to tutor/teach/talk harp, just write your skype handle and what time would be best for you beneath.

This is a great idea GH. maybe there is a way we could post what we are looking to learn and those that are qualified or have masted that area could make arrangements. Maybe on its own page like the for sale page. ----------

True, people that want to learn certain stuff, could state it... and of course people that want to teach should also list what they feel comfortable in and maybe link to some of their playing.
Hmmm... yes. I don't really know how to organize all this specifically (I just kinda threw it out there with hopes that it'll work out :)... a dedicated thread definitely sounds like a sensible idea. Maybe we could start on this thread and see how we organize this in the future depending on how it all works out.
Btw. I want to learn to 'woop' like Sonny Terry... so if there's anybody out there that has mastered this technique... or at least knows how to explain it ...? :) ---------- The MBH thread-thread thread!

Yeah, this is a great idea. The other day I was thinking about posting a thread with the title 'Wanted: guinea pig students' or something along those lines. I've been thinking about doing a bit of teaching myself, and was thinking that doing it free of charge would be a good way to get experience. I used to teach piano, and have a great deal of confidence when it comes to observing a student and explaining things to them. I also have a degree in music, and have taught in a classroom environment.
Before I put my name on a list, I'll have to check out whether using Skype in that way will rinse out all my broadband credit. I'm on prepay, and £15 per month for 3 gigabytes gives me plenty, but I don't know whether Skype will chew through that in no time or whether it's independent of my broadband allowance. I'll look into that and/or keep an eye on this thread.
Once again, great idea, GH. ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

Buddha, that's easy... I'll just throw some Oscar's Bacon at them. I'm sure your dogs can ignore regular bacon, but Oscar's bacon? Not a chance.

Are you trying to like make a service where we teach each other stuff? Give and take, etc? If so, that'd be totally cool! My Skype handle is my username. If anything I can help with reading music, rhythm, etc.

Hmmm, Ive been learning from multiple sources (diff. teachers, books, the net, etc) over 2 years time & wouldnt suggest I could help anyone with tips unless they were brand new to the harmonica. (And not the which harp stuff cause that drives me nuts!) But Im definitely interested in learning from or jamming with others online. My skype is my username but I dont have it up unless I plan something.
Mr Buddha you know Im interested :P .
I think this is a good idea GH, I know Im a member to receive aid in learning even if it is tiny bits here & there as they pop up, lol.

Hmmm... Just discovered Skype cuz one son graduated from college and moved across the country and a daughter moved off to college with a computer that had Skype come with it. I think Ricci said something like ya gotta have organic teachers too, can't just learn off the internet. Agree with that, but scheduling and driving to lessons and stuff gets tough sometimes. Skype might be a happy medium between live and memorex. I'll stay tuned.

I already got 2 in person students in Minot ND after playing with a blues band here. That is crazy for me. Anyway, I'd be willing to "tutor" free of charge. I know for certain I learn just as much teaching as playing. I'd also like to take a session if anybody wants to trade what they know. Send me an email if you are interested and I'll let you know my skype handle.

I'm happy that others like the idea too...
Thanks for everyone that offered to help out.
MAL it was actually not as much thought as 'teaching', but as 'showing the ropes'. There's soo much info out there,... the tutors can help to direct to the right sites, and probably knows the right answer to exactly what they were looking for... of course if they want a technique explained you can show them that too. But it's really to make it easier for them to start off in the online harmonica world. Show them what's going on, how to post on the forum, whatever... and the insider information of the harmonica which they may be interested in. And if they ask some stuff that you are not to familiar with, you'll know who he should go too...

I live in a town that has No ONE to teach the harp in person. And I'd really like a few in person lessons...thing is..Im out of work right now & have no money & any I do earn, well, goes towards my children. I think this is a great idea you've come up with. I sooo want to buy Adam's lessons & am trying to save up to buy a few here & there. But again.. I feel a few in person lessons would work wonders. Perhaps I should post a video of my playing to show my level of playing,Idk. I am a pure beginner, have only been playing for about 3 months now. I use a MB 1896/20 in key of A.

I remembered reading this thread last week. I did enjoy the mass get togethers on Skype from a few months ago.
I'm also available to chat on Skype about harmonica - handle is dan.ridgeway - Add me and hopefully I can shed some light on a few things for anyone interested... or maybe you can teach me.

Ridge, the trick to pulling those off is getting a time when people can get together, and having a host with good bandwidth and a fast computer. (I had OK bandwidth and a slow computer. I fixed the computer part.) The time zones make things crazy. I'd be up for giving it another try, but Saturday and Sunday evenings are bad for me.

Ridge knows his stuff, I spent some time with him at Hill Country.....still blows my mind how cleanly you played the blues scale with 3 draw bent 1/2 step as your root note..I think that is 11th position.

@HarmonicaMick: Using skype will not be independant of your broadband allowance. It does not take up a lot, however. Even if you are using video/voice and chatting with dozens of people a day for hours... I'll just throw the number 500MB to be safe. Do you have at least that much bandwith left at the end of the month? if so, you won't have a problem.

I am new to this forum, and new to the harp. This is my first post. I have watched many youtube lessons and have a few Gindick books. I would appreciate some direction on which to focus. Thank you. Jeff

welcome, juslmn-
you might find it more beneficial to ask more direct questions. and, also, give us an idea of what you can do and where you wanna go.
but speaking in generalities; 1) practice clean single notes 2) work on simple tunes: taps, o' suzanna, three blind mice
