Do all Marine Bands have their plate/comb holes drilled in the same place? (And by all, I mean regular, low tuned, deluxe and crossover, I know they have a MB octaves and soloists and Steve Bakers and stuff that would need holes in other places.)

You know, that's a very good question. I did notice that the plates on my Special 20 and Deuce are basically the same. All the plates on the Blues Band, Hot Metal and Old Standby harps were the same. I'd wager to guess that in this world of mass production that they'd make it easy on themselves and drill all the holes in the plates so that they'd fit any of the harps that they'd be used on. Then if they don't need a hole it's no big deal but if they do need it they have it. On a side note, my Special 20 has 3 screws holding down the reed plates, the Deuce only has two, guess they couldn't drill a hold by the blow side of the comb into wood without it splitting or something.

No! The Marine Band is its own animal. I think the other two are interchangable though.

OK, looks like I thought I had a MB comb but I've in fact got a SP20 comb. That actually works. I have SP20's to put it on. Next question... it's a clear acrylic comb and the reed slots are a just a smidge too short for the reeds of an A harp. I have a B and a Db. I use the A way more often.
Should I try to sand or file the chamber that little bit or try it on the Db? Hmmm, or tell myself that the only solution is to go out and buy an E or F. I only have junk harps in those keys... decisions, decisions.

Er, or some weird hybrid. The reed plate screws fit, but the cover screws don't line up with the holes in the comb.

If you have a Special 20 comb and can get the reed plates to fit then you can always get TurboHarp covers to fit it for $9 bucks. I know, my new word of the day "TurboHarp", but it does seem like a sound(pun intended) concept and the covers would be cheaper then either MB or Special 20 covers from Hohner.

Hi Nate.
If we're talking about the same comb here, I can put low-D MB reedplates on it and the comb fits fine.
So you should be able to fit any MB reedplates (high or low) on it.
Do MBs have the nail holes in the same place? I don't think so. I think the new MBs have the nails in different spots than the old ones (decades old) I have. I drill all my plates the same, so the holes I drill are not in the same place as the nails on new MBs.
What reedplates do you have that already have holes in them? Are they SP20 reedplates? ----------

Lol, Frank, that might be an interesting idea... TurboHarp has clear covers. If I put those on a harp with clear combed harp...
Actually, I've wondered if anyone makes plates out of clear materials. I wonder if Lexan plates... or ALON. Not only would the harp look cool but it would be bullet resistant!
I really like the look of clear combs. I'd love to have a set of harps, with clear combs and alternating combinations of black, brass and chrome covers with chrome and brass reed plates.

Arzajac, our posts must have passed in the ether. Yeah, it's that comb. I have a set of SP20 Db reed plates on it now. The screw holes for the reed plate line up. I tried the reed plate from an SP20 A on it and the reeds on the low end brushed against the inside of the comb. The first thing I tried though, was a MB Low F. It's reeds actually seemed to swing, but the nail holes were in a different spot (2 of them almost lined up, the third was way off). I tapped the reed plate for a new hole to line up with the third hole, but things were just a little off, making the reed plate stick out too far. The screw holes line up perfectly with the SP20 (well, the three holes on the comb do, the SP20 has a few more screw holes, but 3 seems to hold it well.) The problem is that the cover holes on the reed plate and covers, which did line up on the MB, don't on the SP20 (it has 1 center hold). I suppose I could tap the reed plate for a MB cover, but since I put my MB cover back on the Low F I don't have one handy.
Aside from the cover screw not going through though, it looks beautiful. I'm thinking maybe I'll pick up a MB in E, swap the plates and drill the wood comb to put the spare SP20 cover on. Why did I have to take BBQ's advice and play softly? I should have a whole box of broken harps by now!
