Frank, just get a Turbolid in cherry red or licorice black. Both look awesome on a SP20 comb and plates. (Skip the cottoncandy pink.:) Turbolids will do a couple of things. The open back projects well and is great for hand compression/wah-wah stuff. The profile will force your mouth open a bit more which improves tone and tongue blocking. It will change the sound a bit, makes it a bit more 'wet' but that's not necessarily a bad think. Gives low harp (G,A,B-flat) more of a horn sound. They are also ergonomically correct, you will never start to play backwards and with the colour coding you can tell which key is what easily on a dark stage. I have enough lids to do a full harp set colour coded but I do go back and forth between 'lids and no lids but I always seem to drift back to them.

The black makes a SP20 look like a mini CX-12 chromatic but the cherry red is just too cool for school.

I was speaking to someone at blues week who said that they played them because their beard didn't get caught in them.

TN, yeap, that's where the forum search is, but you may get better results typing 'at modernbluesharmonica.com' (without the '''s) into Google. I keep meaning to try some of their stuff. GH posted a thread about their magnetic harmonica! (They said their working on a better version). The other useful thing I've heard mentioned about their lids is they are snap on instead of screw on, so if you are doing tinkering inside your harp it's quicker to get the covers back on to test. Someone said they have a set of lids just for when they are tinkering. Steve Harvell, who you'll notice on the endorsers list at Turboharp, posts here in spurts.

Hey Frank- told you in an earlier thread but in case you missed it. Turboharp has a special until the end of the month: send in any harp (clunkers they say) and they'll give you a $10 rebate on any harmonica purchase from them. So send in one of those cheap harps you got and you get a "nice $50-60 harp" that you've been looking for. I'd say if you want to try the turbolids to order one separate, just so you still have the cover plates if you don't like them- it's hit or miss.

The Turboharp AX/Sp20 is a custom harmonica. They will set it up according to your description (overblow, etc.). It also has 2 extra plates that sit beneath both reed plates. I guess the idea is to create a more airtight harp. The TurboTwenty is a OOTB Sp20 with a turbolid on it.

TNFrank, not sure if you've seen this link but you might find it as a helpful guide and save yourself from making more similar posts: http://www.ianchadwick.com/essays/harmonicas.htm. Check it out.

If you say Steve Harvell 3 times, alone in the dark, staring in your bathroom mirror, He will probably come and post a video of him using turbo harps.

I'm not sure whether my playing style has subtly changed or there is a layer of gunk between the covers and the reed plate or I'm just keeping my 'stache a little shorter, but I'm getting caught less frequently than I used too. Lee Oskars boggle my mind. They do such a good job of making the front of their harps mustache friendly, but then they put those silly squares on them. It's like they have a cosmetics testing deal with Epilady.

Frank, slow down, you might want to actually wait until you've had a chance to try the turbolids, before you start trying to trade away the harps you have. For all you know you may hate the turbolids, I know several people who really dislike them, you may turn out to be one of the people who like them and want to use them on all your harps (which would put you among a very small percentage of people), but you should try them first before assuming you'll like them.
Also, if you haven't yet ccontacted the guy who makes the turbo harps, you might want to do so. I think there's a good chance that he could fit turbolids onto Big Rivers. The turbolids that he sells on his website only fit Special 20s (and similar shaped harps) but he also sells Marine Bands and Meisterclass harps that have been outfitted with turbolids. If he makes turbolids that can fit those harps, I see no reason why those lids wouldn't fit Big Rivers. The Big River is essentially the same size and shape as the Marine Band, except it has a plastic comb (and the reeds are different, but that doesn't matter in this case). Also the Meisterclass is an MS harp just like the Big River harps. And all the MS harps are interchangable, the only differences between them is that they have different coverplates (which does matter because you're replacing the coverplates) and the combs are made of different materials (which won't matter, as long as they're the same size). So as I said, if he can put turbolids onto those two harps (which he does), I don't see why he couldn't put them on BigRiver harps, you may just need to contact him.
