I usually get asked "can you play that Hancock song?", so I've assumed Whammer Jammer is our song :) ---------- Ozark Rich

Surely that will depend on where you are playing or come from?
Maybe for you Aussies its 'Waltzing matilda'?;)
Us Poms, if we are playing Chromatic then the theme from 'Last of the Summer Wine'
I dunno, is there a universal benchmark number aka W jammer?

I can't play 'Waltzing Matilda' but oddly I can play 'And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda'. The harmonica is a mysterious instrument.
A universal theme is tough. It would have to be something that is easy to learn but has plenty of headroom for embellishment so more advanced players can show off their chops.

I agree that our song should be "Oh Susannah" Played hastily, without ornamentation in a reluctant and totally ironic way. As in:
"Can you play that thing?"
"Sure [plays Oh Susannah}"
"Are you taking the piss?"
"Well you started it!"

Interesting. The Tap Dance world has the "Shim Sham Shimmy" as their national anthem. They do it en-mass from the beginners on up to the pros when they close out a recital.

For blues harp players I think the only choice is "Juke"

A similar thread came up about a year or more ago. A few peeps mentioned that tune that Area Code 615 does. I can't remember what it's called, but everyone in the UK over a certain age knows it as 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' cos it was the theme tune for that show. I think Hakan has a version of it on his channel, played, rather skilfully, with a maraca accompaniment. ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

Here in the States, everytime you bought a new harmonica, the music stores would give you a complimentary Hohner booklet. Don't have my very first harp, but still have that little booklet.
"Oh Susanna" was the very first I and many others learned.
I never played "Massa's in the Cold, Cold Ground" or "Come Thou Almighty King." Don't even know what they sound like, nor guess ever really cared to know.
Yet besides 'Oh Susanna' - "When the Saints Go Marching In" is probably the most recognized, most played little tune as well!
