First off, John Petrucci is a guitar player, not a bass player. John Mung was the bass player for Dream Theater. Second off, I can't see the vid :( but is he playing anything like this:
Billy Sheehan is one of the most amazing bass players I've ever seen and he's a really humble person too from the interviews I've heard him give. I know when I started playing bass he quickly became one of my heros.
WOW Frank. I thought you were a string player. I'm surpised you don't know who john patitucci is, especially since you claim to play bass. Please be more knowledgeable if you're going to start correcting people.
And no, that 13yr old kid isn't like Billy Sheehan, the 13yr old is much more sensitive and melodic.
Have you heard of Liquid Tension?

If he doesn't play Rock or Metal then I probably don't know him. I only know about Victor Wooten because of some Blues stuff he did with Eric Clapton on a show I saw. Not heard of Liquid Tension, what style of music do they play? I may have to look em' up on YouTube. I'm always up for listening to new stuff.
you can't call yourself a dream theater fan if you are not aware of Liquid Tension. John Patitucci is one of the world's greatest bass players. No serious bass player overlooks him.
You should do some research. The world does not revolve around Rock, Blues or Metal. ---------- "I am a great believer in understanding, not copying."
Now that you mention it his name does ring a slight bell but most of the stuff I played bass to was AC/DC, Metallica, Queensryche, Judas Priest, ect. Think I will look up LT on YouTube though, sounds interesting.
LOL, that's the one I just saw on YouTube. Is that Mike Portnoy on drums. I didn't know that he left the band until just now when I googled how to correctly spell his last name. When did that happen? If I wouldn't know it and someone were to play LTE music I'd swear that it was Dream Theater. I love this Prog Metal stuff, guess it's because I really loved Rush when I was growin' up, still do love em'.
*jaw drops* Truely gifted. Not to compare them but here is a guy a bass player friend turned me on to. Pretty awesome what imaginative people with the intent to be creative can accomplish.

Not to get too far off topic but have you ever heard of Arch Enemy Chris? I'm not a huge fan of "Cookie Monster" vocals but Angela can really belt it out and I actually kind of like her style of Cookie Monster vocals.
I really love the lyrics to the chorus to this song. Very simple but very powerful.

yes frank. I don't listen to much of that stuff though. It's pretty heavy for my delicate palate.
I spent some time with Stu Hamm and met players like Satriani and Vai through him. They are into a lot of this heavier stuff. And to play with them, I spent a lot of time listening to this kind of music.
Did you know Satriani is a closest harmonica player? If you ever hear him play and pop out an OB, that would be my influence. :-P

Here is Patitucci with Bill Stewart (one of the best jazz drummers around, probably one of the best drummers in general):
I'm glad Chris corrected him for me, because it's DEFINITELY not Petrucci. Patitucci is one of the most amazing musicians I have ever heard, not just bass player. I'm glad I found this guy. Enjoy.

I don't think Mike Portnoy has left Dream Theater, he's just temporarly joined Avenged Sevenfold for an album and tour because their drummer died a little while back.I get to see Avenged Sevenfold next week with him on drums, should be a great gig:o) ----------
Watched some of that Sheehan video and I like that young guy much more. Bass players like Sheehan are more common than those 'melodic' ones. That young guy has unbelievable technique for such a young guy!!! You know, if I keep practicing I could jam with this guy! That'd be awesome! Better work on my grooves!
Nope, Mike is no longer with Dream Theater. Google it for yourself if you won't believe me. Sad but true.
Ok, now I know why I don't know more about John Patitucci, he's more of a Free Form Jazz kind of guy which is a style that I really don't care for a lot. I love Smooth Jazz but Free Form just sounds too disjointed to me. And before someone takes what I just said out of context, NO, I'm not dising it, I just don't care for that style of music, if you like it that's cool with me. As for Arch Angle I first heard about em' and Angela on "Metal: A Headbangers Journey" which is an awesome documentary about Metal. They show it on VH1C from time to time. I couldn't believe that a woman was belting out cookie monster vocals like that so I just had to look her and the band up on YouTube and WOW, she rocks. There's just something "sexy" about a woman that can "sing" like that. Not sure what it is but man o man, I love it. Most of the Metal that I really am into has a much more melodic style of singing like Iron Maiden, Queensryche or the like.

Great kid player I enjoyed that. Frank the speed metal stuff is crap. Yeah, I said it, crap. WTF?! Has nothing to do with the thread. whatever....

Chris and I just kind of got off on a tangent when he said he listened to all kind of music and I ask if he'd listened to anything like Arch Enemy so actually is does kind of fit in with the thread in a round about kind of way. I wish I had the money in my bank account that they're getting for turning out that "crap". I like Metal, always have, always will. To each his own.
I have heard good metal players, and bad. The bad ones play fast, have no tone, and the kick drum never stops. I have heard some drummers that are so tasteful. Thank God for them and those tasteful musicians.
