Good lesson. There are a lot of interesting voices in the mix. I love Steve Perry's voice, and I was surprised by how big Pink's voice was. Bob Dylan's voice never fails to annoy me. He's written some of my all time favorite songs, but they are all cover versions that I like.
What exactly is the point of this thread? That it is possible to phrase something differently and that no human voice has the exact same timbre? I'm finally awake thanks ---------- WORLD CLASS HARMONICA PLAYER
guys, this isn't really about singing. So many people ask about developing an original voice on the harmonica and that starts with a foundation in understanding what it takes to create an original voice.
"We are the World" to me is the perfect example of how different people play/sing the same thing but with a completely original and distinctive slant.
What you should notice is the overall tone and phrasing of the singers. Tone doesn't necessarily mean having a full rich and thick sound, it's about having the ability to control that tone, sometimes it's thin, think and sometimes it's in between. The other component is phrasing... listen to how some singer hold certain notes where others will sing a series of notes in the same spot.
All of this can be applied to your harmonica playing in any style of music. ---------- "I am a great believer in understanding, not copying."

I think it is interesting to see how the original version was so much better than the remake. Perhaps it is because they are trying hard to copy the original instead of doing something new. Something to think about when playing your favorite old song.

Oh come on Sandy, I disagree with Buddha as often as anyone, but you are just being contrarian. Name another song where you are going to hear so many distinctive voices for comparison. How about contributing something to the conversation instead of just being the site troll?
A difficult concept, for some reason. I appreciate the effort to present the video as a lesson. Dylan is as fine an example of original voice as there has ever been (although not here, of course).
Related, I don't like the sound of pedals, maybe any of them. They disguise voice. This is part of why 57 mics and PA can sound so good. The only box I use is an original brown reverb unit and I rarely use it. It's between me and my connection across the grid.
