Hi NODster, I guess that's me you refer to. I'm probably more of a seal who thinks he's a shark.

Firstly, thanks to NOD for your work in getting the festival going, the heads up, and the exhortation to 'have a go.'

Otherwise I would have been just practicing in my bedroom, pleasing myself and annoying my wife. I think we've all been there.

The showdown was at the Toukley Golf Club bistro, 100km north of Sydney.
There was a baker's dozen of competitors, from trembling amateurs to seasoned pros, a backing band for those who wanted, and judging was Jim Conway, the legendary Aussie harp player.

Good venue and a well lubricated crowd (a group of ladies on my table downed 4 battles of champagne among the three of them -- husband was driving).
They had schooners of beer on special for $2.50.

The ladies are learning the harp so I told them to look up Adam on the interweb. I got mself on some event mailing list so there were some networking benefits.
Competitors displayed a pleasing variety of styles from Sonny Terryesque to funky and of course, NOD's Delta stylings.

The event was very professionally run with some quite decent prizes. I scored a Suzuki harp; have played Hohners up till now but was keen on experimenting.

After the prize giving, Jim Conway played a few songs with the band before he had to shoot off, then NOD and his bro played some more. I had to leave then (after you finished, NOD)but I understand there was more bluesy (and boozy?)entertainment after.

Conclusions:
Nothing focuses the mind on the need to practice like knowing you are going to be playing in front of a crowd. I dunno, over 100 people? OK, to ME that's a crowd...

It was a good event, and I would definitely do it again, not because I happened to win but because it was a lot of fun.

I am self-diagnosed as an intermediate player and dithered about entering because of Confidence Deficit Syndrome.

So if any of you out there are in a similar place in your learning curve, and a similar frame of mind, and thinking about joining a jam or contest or whatever, do as NOD says and 'have a go.'

For all you Aussies, try and get out there next time. It was definitely worth the drive!

Well done Bronzie! Sounded like a good event, there must have been a fair bit of talent floating around.
Unfortunately I could not make it, but am pleased it went off well. As NOD said, we could do with more events like this over here.
How's the Suzuki? Model/key?? Good job again BW and keep spreading the gospel!
(yes NOD still owe you a beer) :~)

Thanks NOD, Nate, Rubes.
I really do appreciate all the good work done by everyone, led by Adam.
The harp's a Bluesmaster, Bb. Sweet sounding to me,
Good it's a Bb so I can continue to practice along with Adam's lessons. My old one is starting to show a bit of wear and tear.

Cheers!

Dear Nasty,
thanks for taking part in the blues harp showdown, and for your great performance at the little blues festival.

We hope your experience was positive, and provided a new performance platform to showcase your skills.

Everyone enjoyed your delta style - it was memorable.

As far as the scores go, you did well in your section, being ahead to mid-field of others in the male section.

Congratulations!

We hope you will come along to future Little Blues Festivals, held on the first of every month, at Toukley Golf Club, 5 PM

Our second birthday is on November 7. Please let me know if you'd like a spot to play.

Kind regards,

Julia Starr
